Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • March 17, 2010 Allendale Borough skier makes post season regional event Ten-year-old Daniel Patrick of Allendale recently qualified for the Francis Piche Invitational Championship, a post season event for the region’s top skiers. Patrick skis in the J5 Alpine Racing Division for Team Campgaw in Mahwah. The upcoming race will be held in Gunstock, New Hampshire on March 20. He will compete against top racers from each Northeastern state. Patrick learned that he would be participating in this regional alpine invitational after he finished the 14th Annual Karen Wiebel Memorial Race at Mountain Creek on Feb. 28. Patrick began skiing at just 22 months of age. In December 2009, he joined the Campgaw Mountain Developmental team, and his coaches encouraged him to try racing. After his first race at Mount Peter early in January, he was hooked. He currently trains four days a week -- a total of 14 hours -- with Coaches John Nielson and Mike Mandel. “We knew he was an excellent skier early on,” said Patrick’s parents Molly Kissel-Patrick and Doug Patrick. “He’s loved the sense of speed from an early age and, as recently as this past Saturday, he commented that he believes that racing and skiing fast is as close as you can get to flying on the ground. Despite Daniel’s mild manner off the course and his positive relationship with his teammates and competitors, he really likes to win.” They added, “As a long time skiing family we are thrilled to see him advance in the sport. We are delighted to watch him come down the mountain, going through the gates, or clearing the slalom poles because we know that when he is on the ski hill he could not be happier.” Final Days • Final Days • Final Days • Final Days • Final Days • Final Days SALE 65%ENTIRE STOCK! off MUST LIQUIDATE UP TO GOING OUT OF BUSINESS Daniel Patrick Council braces for upcoming budget crunch by John Koster The Allendale Borough Council spent much of last week’s short public meeting bracing for the next two weeks, when state aid figures will have to be integrated into the municipal budget and the budgets for the K-8 school system and Northern Highlands Regional High School. The only substantive vote at last week’s meeting was the introduction of two ordinances to protect Allendale’s fiscal future. Once adopted, the ordinances will allow Allendale to collect on liens placed against abandoned or neglected houses when the houses change hands, so the borough will receive recompense for maintaining the appearance of the borough if the owners cannot or will not take care of them. Mayor Vince Barra pointed out that the council expects to receive its own state budget figures from Trenton on March 16, and that the borough council could not finalize its own plans or come up with a tax rate until those figures were available. Suzanne LaMonica, working in concert with other council members, said that both school districts had asked to meet with the council to work out details of their own. She pointed out that the schools would have an even tighter run. Northern Highlands will not have state figures until March 18, but has to get back to the state by March 22, and had already scheduled a budget explanation meeting with the public on March 30. “They basically have five days to turn the budget around,” LaMonica said. LaMonica said that Northern Highlands had been cooperative and understood the need to reduce or control spending due to the economic situation. “It appears they have been pretty thorough,” she said after talks with school administrators. The council will also be meeting with Dr. Jerilyn Caprio, superintendent of the K-8 Allendale school district and with the Allendale Board of Education on March 24 to discuss the K-8 budget. Allendale’s K-8 district is planning a March 31 hearing on the district’s tentative budget as part of the board’s 8 p.m. regular meeting. In other business, Allendale Borough Administrative Officer Gwen McCarthy reported that Nancy Donnelly of the borough office staff had saved the taxpayers $7,500 this year by doing the tax billing internally instead of sending the residential and commercial tax bills out – a savings the council acknowledged with gratitude.
