Waldwick March 17, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 13 The Bergen County chapter of Habitat for Humanity has received Bergen County Planning Board approval to proceed with its Waldwick Affordable Housing project. The project is being developed in conjunction with the New Jersey Council on Affordable Housing and will convert a large single-family property on Wyckoff Avenue into four affordable housing units for families in need. Habitat and COAH are in the midst of the family selection process and plan to hold a lottery for qualified applicants within the next few weeks. The Borough of Waldwick had owned the Wyckoff Avenue property for some time, and it was in a state of disrepair. Not wanting to see it demolished and recognizing the need to support affordable housing in their community, Waldwick Mayor Russell “Buddy” Litchult and Borough Administrator Gary Kratz approached Habitat Bergen and ultimately gave the site to the organization for rehabilitation and conversion. Though originally slated to get underway last fall, the project was delayed as the county and Habitat’s engineers reviewed changes to the front of the property necessitated by its location on a county thoroughfare. With county approval now in hand and building permits already issued, the goal is to complete the project by next spring. Fundraising has been underway since fall, and Habitat volunteers are being scheduled to help complete construction. Volunteers and funds are still needed to ensure a successful project. To learn more about Habitat’s mission, volunteer, or make a donation, contact the chapter at (201) 457-1020 or visit www.habitatbergen.org.
