Waldwick March 10, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 5 The Waldwick Band will present its next concert on March 14 at the Crescent School at 165 Crescent Avenue, Waldwick. The 3 p.m. performance will feature clarinetist John Centenaro. There is no admission charge for the concert, which is sponsored by the Waldwick Department of Recreation. Centenaro, who began studying the clarinet at age nine, is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music. He studied with Peter Simenaurer of the New York Philharmonic and Charles Russo of the New York City Opera Orchestra. He served as principal bass clarinetist for the Manhattan School of Music Orchestra for most of his college years, and continued to play frequently as a freelance artist after graduation. After a long hiatus during which he pursued a busi- Soloist is also composer at next Waldwick Band concert ness career, he began playing again when he joined the Waldwick Band at the invitation of Concertmaster Naomi Freshwater. He currently performs with several area concert and chamber groups and has been active as a singer, conductor, arranger, and composer for many years in northern New Jersey. Centenaro will perform the “Concertino” for clarinet and band by Carl Maria von Weber. He will also be on the program as a composer. Centenaro recently composed “The Hanover Wind Symphony Silver Jubilee March,” which was premiered by the Hanover Wind Symphony. The Waldwick Band will play the second performance of that composition. In 2007, Centenaro composed a march for the Waldwick Band. The band will be directed by Edmund A. Moderacki who has chosen Robert Ward’s “Jubilation: An Overture” and Clare Grundman’s “Music for a Carnival” as the featured compositions. Other works to be presented will include James Curnow’s “Festivity” and selections from “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull” as scored by band member Carl Stromberg. An arrangement of the music of Cole Porter by Robert Russell Bennett and marches by Eric Coates, Fred Jewell, Edwin Franko Goldman, and John Philip Sousa will complete the program. Information about the band’s winter season and spring activities is available at www.waldwickband.org.
