The enterprise, headed by Marlene Casey and Len Carney, was first hired by the borough in 2005. “I look forward to their continuing assistance in exploring grant opportunities for the town,” Ho-Ho-Kus Mayor Thomas Randall said last week following the council’s decision. Capital Alternatives receives a retainer from the borough and a percentage of the value of any grants the company is able to obtain for Ho-Ho-Kus. Former Councilwoman Susan Hewitt recommended Casey to the governing body in 2004. Hewitt noted the grant writer’s high success rate in obtaining funding for municipal projects. Casey was originally considered exclusively for the pursuit of funding for the drainage project at Arbor Drive, but she asked borough officials for a list that would include various projects, as she prefers to work with municipalities’ overall needs, rather than on one specific issue. With Casey’s assistance, the borough has been able to obtain grants for Arbor Drive, the ongoing streetscape project, and for other local projects. Before Casey founded Capital Alternatives in 1986, she logged 17 years as a grants administrator for the New Jersey Division of Local Government Services and LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION, INC. Full Service Landscape Professionals since 1978 E the New Jersey Department of Transportation. For eight years, she was manager and project administrator for Schwanewede Hals the Bergen County-based municipal engineering firm that provides services to Ho-Ho-Kus. In 1992, Casey welcomed Carney, a former New York publishing executive and business consultant. Since 1986, Capital Alternatives has secured over $60,000,000 in grants. Over 90 percent of these grants have been awarded to Bergen County municipalities; the balance went to municipalities in Passaic County. Capital Alternatives has secured millions of dollars in grant funds for various local municipalities, including Ramsey, Midland Park, and Glen Rock. The firm specializes in upper-class communities that need well-thought-out applications. Casey also specializes in historical preservation. At the time Capital Alternatives was first hired, the borough believed Casey’s expertise in this area could help the borough with the future of the Gingrich House. The historical building has since been purchased by a private individual who has restored the home and put it up for sale last year.
