Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • March 3, 2010 Allendale The fourth grade students at Allendale’s Brookside School recently learned about starting a business during their economics component. Using ‘Service Learning,’ which is a method of teaching and learning that combines academic work with service to the community; the students raised money for their business by doing household chores. Each fourth grade class made doorknob hangers, critter magnets, picture frames, or beaded items. Items were then sold to other students and donation jars were placed around Brookside School. Through their sales and donations, the students raised $450, which was donated to Seeing Eye Foundation’s Pennies for Puppies program. Recently, Anita Eigen visited the school with her dog Campie to discuss Pennies for Puppies and how this program supports the Seeing Eye Foundation. Eigen showed a short film told from the perspective of a Seeing Eye dog. She explained that puppies that are candidates for the Seeing Eye program are placed with a foster family for one year and then go through a four-month training program. There are certain requirements for being a service dog, and only one quarter of the puppies raised become Seeing Eye dogs. The rest of the puppies are adopted by families. Brookside students presented Eigen with a check and dog treats. Students are pictured at right visiting with Eigen and Campie. Brookside students experience hands-on learning Superintendent search to continue March 4 The Allendale Board of Education will convene a meeting to continue the search for a new superintendent of schools for the K-8 district on March 4. The meeting, which will be held in the Brookside School library at 8 p.m., will continue the search for a replacement for Dr. Jerilyn Caprio. Dr. Caprio previously announced her resignation and will be leaving the district on June 30. The meeting will be preceded by a closed executive session and no formal action will be taken. The meeting for the hearing on the tentative school budget has also been rescheduled and will take place on March 31 at 8 p.m. at the Brookside School. The budget session had originally been scheduled for March 30. Information on the budget will be provided and action may be taken at this meeting. The school district has proposed programs and services in addition to the Core Curriculum Content Standards adopted by the state. J.
