Emergency responders, civilians earn Life Saving Award
by Jennifer Crusco Last week, Ho-Ho-Kus Police Chief Gregory Kallenberg presented Life Saving Awards to the police personnel, emergency responders, school crossing guards, and civilians who aided Ho-Ho-Kus on Nov. 20, 2009, when a man armed with a shotgun threatened to take his own life, while he kept police at bay. These awards recognized “the courageous action of a few and the training, dedication, and compassion of others” who saved the man’s life after the seven-hour ordeal. Honorees included Lieutenant John Wanamaker, Detective Sergeant Michael Pattman, Sergeant Chris Minchin, Sergeant Ed Freeman, Patrolman Eugene Schultz, Patrolman Jaime Bodart, Patrolman Anthony Balestrieri, and Dispatcher Brian Dench of the Ho-Ho-Kus Police Department. Allendale Police Department honorees included Detective John Mattice, Patrolman Scott Kunzel, and Sergeant Joseph Carey. Waldwick Police Department honorees were Sergeant Gordon Andre, Patrolman Tom Dowling, Sergeant Robert Woessner, and Patrolman William Wright. Ridgewood Police Dispatcher Lynn Tedeschi was honored for her key role in keeping calls properly routed, and Saddle River Police Department honorees were Sergeant Ed Giannotti and Officer Charles Schwartz. Bergen County Police personnel who received the awards included Captain Uwe Malakas; Lieutenants Divine, Higgins, and Lepinski; Sergeants Carney, Smith, Espinosa, Abrahamsen, Leventhal, and Donow; Officers Rock, Baker, Weston, Locascio, Escobar, and Sileo; Detectives Gmiterek, Perry, Mayo, Carrafiello, Tapia, and Mills; SCT DiCosimo; PSTs Essert and Stewart; Dr. Joe Teast; and Medics Jodi Kennedy, Ron Rotunda, and Erik Harvey. Ho-Ho-Kus Ambulance Corps honorees included Carol Tyler, Gary Tyler, Chrissy Tyler, Jeff Pattman, Gordon Hamm (who is also a council member), Eric Schauer, and Robert Evans. CERT personnel honored were Stanley Kober, Mike Limatola, Chris Males, Patricia Nazzaro, Joe Stewart, Cindy Tharayil, and Sue Veerling-Steinhoff. Suzy Lee, Fong Law, and Carol Schutt were the crossing guards honored, and civilians Carmela Gesner and Rita Sands were recognized for opening their homes to the police so personnel could make use of bathrooms and other creature comforts. “The awards were a testament to the extraordinary efforts of professional and volunteer emergency services. The coordinated efforts of all our emergency services within Ho-Ho-Kus as well as the cooperation with surrounding towns and Bergen County combined to produce a successful resolution to a tense and dangerous situation. Their efforts were a textbook example of how a crisis situation can be handled,” Ho-Ho-Kus Mayor Thomas Randall said following the awards ceremony. Chief Kallenberg pointed out that the November incident has been reviewed by Bergen County personnel. As a result of that review, the Bergen County SWAT Team, and Ho-Ho-Kus Police Sergeants Pattman and Minchin have received departmental citations from the Bergen County Police Chiefs Association. The chief praised the cooperation of all parties, which led to the peaceful conclusion to a tense situation. “An outstanding job was done by all. The mutual aid was outstanding, and an amazing number of people were involved,” Kallenberg added.
