Historical Society moves ahead with tower restoration
Glenn Corbett, vice president of the Waldwick Historical Society, recently reported that the restoration of the railroad tower at Bohnert Place continues to progress. Plans eventually call for the tower to be opened to the public. The railroad tower, he explained, allowed the trains to The Waldwick Chamber of Commerce will use part of the funds raised from its recent 5K Run to repair the apron and part of the driveway at the back entrance to the high School athletic field that the chamber uses for the run. Run Chairman Stan Kowalski had noted that the area was in need of repair and presented a danger to the approaching runners as well as to students who use the field. “We realized it was a safety issue during the 5K Run. If we repair it, we help the students and are in good shape for the 5K Run

next year,” said Chamber President Christine Figliuolo. Resident Doug Mayer of DSM will do the actual work charging the chamber only for materials. Other recipients of funds from the 5K Run include the local schools, four $500 scholarships, the Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and CERT for new radios. The chamber is considering specific projects for the additional funds, including a return of movie night and perhaps banners for the downtown area.

be switched from one track to another in this multi-track area. The two-story tower dates from the 1880s and became a focal point for a group known as All-Aboard Waldwick. This group, Corbett said, has been folded into the Waldwick Historical Society. In the past eight or nine years, Corbett said local volunteers have spent approximately $100,000 to restore the building. Funding has been provided by private donors, grants, preservation funds from the state, and local fundraisers. He said that New Jersey Transit owns the property, and has played a small role in the project. Corbett said the pattern has been that his group has received money as other funds are being spent. He said several thousand dollars are still needed to finish the project. “The tower is on the National Register of Historic Places, so we must follow certain guidelines,” Corbett explained. To date, restoration efforts have included carpentry work, a new stairwell, painting, and flooring. One of the major projects that must still be accomplished is reinstalling the switching equipment. “It’s very heavy, and it must be brought in on a railroad car,” Corbett said. Inside wiring must still be added, and a major goal is to install an iron fence, which will allow groups to be brought into the tower. “I hope at least in the next two years we’ll be in a position to open (the tower) to the public,” Corbett said. He envisions display cases with objects that describe the history of the railroad and the borough. He noted that no Waldwick tax dollars have been used for the project. “We’ve accomplished a lot,” he concluded.
