Boland and Yellen refurbished and decorated a child care center and coordinated summer activities for homeless children at Eva’s Village in Paterson. The Gold Award is the highest and singlemost demanding award a Girl Scout can achieve. Award winners must demonstrate leadership, determination, perseverance, and creativity. Boland concentrated her efforts on the infants’ portion of the child care center. She painted the walls, and made curtains, sleep mat covers, pillows, and blankets. She also created an infant schedule board and artwork for the walls of the nursery. Her outreach included seeking donations of a rocking chair, baby supplies, and high chairs. “This nursery provides a safe place for children to stay while their mothers are receiving addiction treatment services,” Boland said.
