Renewing interest in life’s joys Literary agent to present publishing workshop In today’s competitive book market, selling your manuscript to a publishing company takes as much marketing acumen and public relations savvy as it does writing skill. Literary agent Jan Kardys, a 30-year veteran of nearly a dozen publishing companies, will present “Getting Published” at the Waldwick Public Library on Tuesday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m. Kardys will offer an insider’s perspective on how publishers think and how to win them over. Topics addressed in the workshop will include writing a book proposal and query letter, submitting a manuscript to a publisher, creating a marketing plan, negotiating agreements and contracts, developing an ad campaign, taking advantage of subsidiary rights, and many other aspects of the publishing process. Kardys, president of Black Hawk Literary Agency, has diversified publishing experience with the following major publishing corporations: Warner Books/Little Brown & Company, Macmillan Publishing Company, Charles Scribner’s Sons, Prentice Hall/Simon & Schuster, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Doubleday, Scholastic, Lippincott & Crowell, St. Martin’s Press, Conde Nast Publications, and Google. She has held various executive positions in trade publishing in editorial, subsidiary rights, sales, licensing, database design, imaging, royalty conversions, contracts, and copyrights and permissions departments. The workshop is free and open to the public; however, space is limited and advance registration is required. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. To ease the pain of spinal stenosis, sciatica, and lumbar issues, Richard Kuiken received an epidural at a local hospital. He then selected The David F. Bolger Post-acute Care Unit (PACU) at Christian Health Care Center for his physical and occupational therapy. “I was in the PACU for about five weeks. The therapy was good, and the nursing staff was wonderful. My wife volunteers at Christian Health Care Center, and we know a lot of people who work there. Overall, I was impressed and pleased with the whole facility. It was good and clean and that is important to me. The dietitian was excellent. At the time I wasn’t eating very well. She evaluated me like I was her son. With the PACU’s therapy, I’m back to spending time as an amateur radio operator… I love speaking to people in foreign countries!” – Richard Kuiken Regain your lifestyle at the PACU.
