Allendale
Hughes named district’s interim superintendent
by John Koster The Allendale K-8 Board of Education has employed veteran school administrator Lawrence Hughes as interim superintendent of schools from July 1 through Dec. 31. Hughes succeeds Dr. Jerilyn Caprio, who will retire at the end of the current school year. A graduate of Bogota High School and Montclair State College with a BA and an MA, Hughes has also been enrolled in the doctorate program at Fordham University. He is now serving as interim principal of the Tenafly Middle School. His responsibilities to that district will end on June 24. “This is a great district,” Hughes said. He has been a resident of Allendale for the past eight years and praised Dr. Caprio for running an excellent program and for her popularity with students and parents. The new interim superintendent has served as principal of Wyckoff’s Eisenhower Middle School from 1995 to 2001 and as principal of Wyckoff’s Sicomac Elementary School from 1991 to 1995. He has also served as a principal in Park Ridge, and most recently as a superintendent in Demarest from 2001 to 2008. Since 2008, he has

served in interim supervisory positions in Tenafly, Montvale, and Rutherford. Dr. Caprio, who has served for four years as Allendale’s K-8 superintendent of schools, announced her resignation some months ago, but no permanent replacement has been approved and Hughes was recommended at the board’s reorganization meeting. Though his official confirmation only came on June 8, he has been learning the ropes in Allendale for the past several weeks. In other business, the board approved the change in employment of Allison Faasse from a part-time math teacher to a full-time math teacher at a salary of $59,935 at step 9 of the teacher’s guide. The school also approved two field trips: the annual middle school band picnic and the seventh grade end of year social will be convoked at zero expense to the taxpayers. The Brookside/Hillside Music & Arts Association will pick up incidental expenses for the band picnic. Dr. Caprio also congratulated Brian Pricing and Collette Mather and the Brookside School Upper Chorus and Senior Band for attaining the “superior” rating at the High Note Festival in Dorney Park.
