Last week, area voters cast their ballots in support of the Republican primary candidates. With the official support of their party, those candidates will now prepare to run in the November general election. Independent candidates do not appear on the primary ballot and have until the day of the primary to announce their candidacy. Allendale Incumbent Republican Mayor Vincent Barra received 197 votes in his party’s primary. Incumbent Councilman Ari Bernstein received 188 votes and incumbent Councilwoman Susan Lamonica received 186 votes. Both council members are Republicans. No Democrats filed for election in that party’s primary this year. Saddle River Two three-year seats are available on the Saddle River Borough Council this year. Republican incumbent Karen Mastriano and newcomer Dr. Warren Boardman each received 189 ballots. No Democrats filed for their party’s primary, and no Independents have stepped forward to challenge the Republicans in November. Upper Saddle River Upper Saddle River’s Republican council candidates Dr. Jonathan Ditkoff and Dr. Thomas Hafner received 188 votes and 185 votes, respectively. No Democrats ran this year, and no Independents have announced their candidacy. Waldwick Waldwick’s Democratic voters cast their

ballots in that party’s primary, and Republican voters cast write-in ballots for the GOP council incumbents. Democrats Franklin Jaegge and J. Patrick Hunter are again seeking election to the borough council. They received 107 votes and 106 votes, respectively, to earn their party’s nomination. The Republicans, Thomas Giordano and Don Sciolaro, failed to file by the April deadline, blaming the omission on a filing mistake, according to Republican Chairman and Mayor Emeritus James Toolen. In a joint statement, Giordano and Sciolaro thanked their supporters for writing in their names as the Republican candidates. “We are honored once again to be on the November ballot as your choice for council. As in the past we will continue to serve our community and all residents to the best of our ability,” they said. Hunter, 31, is a life-long resident of Waldwick. He is employed by MercedesBenz Manhattan. Jaegge has resided in Waldwick for 50 years, and has served on the Waldwick Fire Department for 48 of those years. Now retired, he was general traffic manager for GEC Marconi for 35 years. Giordano, a 21-year resident, is seeking his third term on the council. He is a licensed funeral director. Sciolaro is completing his second threeyear term. An 18-year resident, he holds degrees from Seton Hall and Fairleigh Dickinson and is the CEO of the National Kitchen and Bath Association.

Can You Help?
continue to meet the needs of families like Bobby’s who might even be neighbors of yours. Please consider helping. We are also in need of a new, good quality copy machine for our center. Save our van: A few years back, we were able to acquire a van due to the generosity of a local church. Since then, we have used the van to make countless deliveries of groceries and other items to ECF families. Now we need your help to keep the van in operation (maintenance, licensing, gas, and oil). If you want to help by contributing or by organizing a fundraiser, please let us know. Help us to help others! Event news: Please attend our Wine & Art Night in Franklin Lakes at the Endless Vine on the new date, Tuesday, June 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. The suggested donation is $40, and we expect this event to sell out. The family Stroll-a-Thon will begin at 9 a.m. on June 26 in Franklin Lakes. Call us to reserve your tickets. Volunteers are welcome to assist in the Regional Center as follows: Tuesday, 10 to 1; Wednesday and Friday, 10 to 5; Thursday, 2:30 to 5; and Saturday, 10 to 1. Call (201) 612-8118 before you stop by. Please do not leave items at the center without checking with us first. Our storage space is limited. Hours are Monday, 10 to 1; Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10 to 5; and Thursday, 10 to 2. The Northern Regional Center is located at 174 Paterson Avenue, Midland Park, NJ 07432. Our hat’s off to Glen Rock Women in Community Service -- a great partner to ECF in our work to help families. WICS members just completed their bi-annual food drive, which netted over 130 bags of groceries. They also supported the Birthday Club by having their members create a complete kit for a child’s birthday party. This family needs help: Bobby is 11 years old and has bone cancer in his leg. He is about to enter sixth grade after spending some time on home instruction because of his illness. When he is not in the hospital for chemotherapy, Bobby likes to spend his 4-29-09 karen/janine time at home on the computer and playing with Legos. Since there are no kids his EmmanuelHelp3x.75(4-29-09) age in his neighborhood, he has to play by him3 x .75 self. He used to enjoy the interaction with friends in school, but now he has to find his own fun. Bobby’s dad works, and his mom has taken on the full-time role of overseeing his medical care. Bobby has one older brother who will be entering high school at the end of the summer. Because of the income loss this family faced with mom out of work, they could use gift certificates to any chain grocery or department store. Our case worker is helping them find alternate resources, but your help is still needed. They have requested summer clothes for Bobby (adult size medium T-shirts). Bobby also likes board games of all types. We are able to make a difference with families like Bobby’s with your contribution to the Family Financial Assistance Program. With your continued donations of food and your financial support, ECF will
