Police, borough officials to meet for contract talks
by Jennifer Crusco Next month, representatives from the Ho-Ho-Kus Council and the Ho-HoKus Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local 353 will meet to begin negotiations for a new PBA contract. Ho-Ho-Kus Mayor Thomas Randall recently reported that the members of the borough’s Police Committee will include Councilmen John Mongelli, Gordon Hamm, and Doug Troast. The police department has reported that Ho-Ho-Kus Police Officers Michael LaCroix, Jaime Bodart, Eugene Schultz, and Michael Pattman will represent the PBA. LaCroix is the local organization’s current president. A firm date has not been set for the first session, but officials have reported that the meeting will take place sometime in July. “The landscape has changed,” Mayor Randall said, commenting on the economic downturn that began in 2008. “We look forward to constructive and frank discussions,” he added. The current agreement, which will continue through Dec. 31, 2010, took effect Jan. 1, 2007. That agreement includes salary increases of 4.25 percent for each of the three years. The PBA contract covers the majority of the police department’s personnel, except for Ho-Ho-Kus Police Chief Gregory Kallenberg and Captain John Wanamaker. The PBA is involved in various community activities and events. Last year, PBA members set up the baseball Speed Throw booth at the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School’s fair, and volunteered their time at the booth with the children. The PBA has also donated funds to cover transportation for the police department’s Junior Police Academy participants, who travel to a minor league baseball game as part of their graduation festivities. The Junior Police Academy, which was launched a few years ago with a handful of soon-to-be sixth grade students, has experienced increasing enrollment each
year the week-long summer program has run. This year’s event will take place at the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School the week of July 5. Asked about his efforts to pare the department’s costs, Chief Kallenberg said, “We always try to work within our budget.” He pointed to the ongoing efforts to reduce overtime pay. Last year, the chief also agreed to give up the new $30,000 police car the department was scheduled to receive.
