Resident wants to divert DPW traffic from Chestnut
An Allendale resident asked the Waldwick Borough Council last week to prohibit Department of Public Works vehicles from using Chestnut Street, a narrow street which is the continuation of Hopper Avenue in Waldwick and connects the industrial zone with Franklin Turnpike and Waldwick’s east side. “Most, if not all, of the DPW trucks exceed the 5-ton posted limit. It’s not a good use of the street,” said Joseph Del Buono of Chestnut Street. “You should order all DPW vehicles to use Waldwick streets only,” he urged. He added his opinion that the vehicles’ insurance coverage might only cover them using town streets. He also said that closing the street would cut down on the traffic in front of the municipal pool. Del Buono said that volume on the street has increased over the past 10-12 years, with 22,000 cars using it in a week’s period. He said 900 cars alone go to the sports bubble in the industrial area, and they should be directed back to the recently improved West Prospect/Wyckoff Avenue areas. “You are playing russian roulette with the pool,” Del Buono said. Councilwoman Anita Bozzo said that if the road were closed, the traffic in front of the pool would actually increase because cars at the bubble would have only one means of egress, and that would be past the pool. The issue is not new. In March 2007 the Allendale Borough Council petitioned the NJ Department of Transportation to close the road to through traffic. The Waldwick Council countered with an opposing resolution. Waldwick’s position is that Hopper Avenue is one of four main north-south arteries connecting the borough with surrounding communities, and that closing the road would eliminate one means of access for emergency vehicles responding to the industrial zone in Waldwick, two recreational areas in Waldwick, and a commercial business and a cluster housing development in Allendale. Allendale cites increased use of the New Jersey Transit railroad lines, which Chestnut Street intersects at an oblique angle, and the traffic needs of the housing development as reasons to close Chestnut/Hopper to through traffic. Borough Attorney Craig Bossong said the council would discuss Del Buono’s request at a later date.
