Waldwick’s summer recreation program will not be offered this year, the victim of the cuts in state aid to the municipality. Borough Administrator Gary Kratz recommended to the mayor and council last week that the tennis program be offered, but that the recreation program be cancelled. Councilman Chuck Farricker, the recreation liaison, said that only 68 children had registered for the four-week summer camp by the June 1 deadline. Kratz had said that

200 registrants were needed for the program to be financially viable. The tennis program garnered 56 registrants, but the minimum number for viability was 80. Kratz said that residents who had pre-registered by the deadline would be contacted, given an apology and offered a refund or the opportunity to switch to tennis. “It could help the pool or other sports programs,” said Farricker, who noted that pool memberships were also down. The council had decided to eliminate the camp and tennis programs as a cost cutting measure following a last-minute reduction of $450,286 in the state energy tax receipts. Kratz had estimated it would cost $18,000 to $20,000 to operate the camp and $2,000 for the tennis program. More than 100 residents signed petitions asking for the programs to be reinstated on a fee basis, however, so Kratz went ahead and developed a modified program at a fee of $100 per child. But the numbers didn’t materialize. Last summer, when the cost was $20 per child for a five-week program, 371 children participated in the camp and 93 in tennis. Previous to 2009, all offerings were free of charge. The budget cuts also forced cancellation of the summer concert series and affected
