Children’s programs announced The songwriting performance team of Presley & Melody will present an interactive concert for children age three and up at the Waldwick Public Library on Tuesday, July 13 at 11:45 a.m. Humorous songs, movement activities, and upbeat music making will have participants dancing and laughing throughout the program. “Fish Tales and Ocean Oddballs,” a program presented by wildlife specialist Bill Boesenberg, will have the Waldwick Library awash in a sea of unusual sea creatures on Tuesday, July 20 at 11:45 a.m. Full Effect Productions will bring the Magic Rabbit (and his magician friend to the library on Saturday, July 31 at 11 a.m. Magician, ventriloquist, and funny man Steve Woyce will return this summer for another hilarious children’s show, “Make a Splash: Read!” These programs, suitable for children age three and up are free and open to residents of Waldwick. Retirement celebration planned On June 14, Crescent Elementary School will host a Retirement Celebration in the school’s all-purpose room for three veteran teachers. The event will begin at 2:45 p.m. Adrienne Dockery, who has been with the Waldwick School system for 37 years; Joanne Leonard, a 26-year veteran; and Frances Paolucci, a 23-year veteran, will be the guests of honor. All past and present students and families are invited to this event to bid farewell to these beloved teachers. Crescent Elementary School is located at 165 Crescent Avenue, Waldwick. Keep your resolution to quit smoking A free smoking cessation program will be held at the Waldwick Public Library on Wednesday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m. Albert J. Ferrara Jr., coordinator of the Bergen County Partnerships for a Tobacco-Free New Jersey will offer methods and resources to use to quit smoking, and information about the health risks of tobacco, secondhand smoke, and smokeless tobacco. Ferrara has been an employee of the county health department for 26 years, and presently works in the Office of Health Promotion. His current position is funded through a grant from the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program. He holds a B.A. from William Paterson University, and is certified by the American Cancer Society to facilitate smoking cessation programs. The Kick Butts, Kick the Habit program is free and open to the public; however, seating is limited and advance registration is recommended. Group to discuss supernatural mystery The Waldwick Library Book Club will host a discussion of “The Angel’s Game” by Carlos Ruiz Zafon on Thursday, June 10 at 7:15 p.m. In 1920s Barcelona, a down-onhis-luck writer strikes a devil’s bargain to become a crime writer and then a beloved pulp novelist in this thrilling supernatural mystery. Copies of the book are available at the library circulation desk. The book discussion club welcomes new members and drop-ins from Waldwick and the surrounding communities. Film series features Oscar winning actresses Waldwick Public Library hosts screenings of classic films of the past on Thursdays at 2 p.m. A brief introduction, setting the film in its historical context, will precede each screening. The theme for the month of June is Oscar Winning Actresses, and the schedule of screenings is as follows: June 10, “Suspicion” (1941), starring Joan Fontaine; June 17, “Anastasia” (1956), starring Ingrid Bergman; and June 24, “Three Faces of Eve” (1957), starring Joanne Woodward. Scholarship Dance for Class of 2011 set The Scholarship Dance to benefit the Waldwick High School Class of 2011 will be held June 19 from 8 p.m. to midnight. Pool registration update Registration for the Waldwick Municipal Pool is underway. Residents are encouraged to register before June 19 to avoid late fees. Registration may be completed by downloading the form from www.waldwicknj.org. Forms and payment can be returned by mail. First time registrants will need to do so in person at the borough clerk’s office in order to have badge photos taken. Permit costs for residents who register before June 19 are $55 for adults ages 18 through 61; $55 for children ages four through 17; and $45 seniors age 62 and up. Children under age three are admitted free. After the opening of the pool on June 19, fees will increase to $65 for adults, $60 for children four through 17; and $55 for seniors. The fee for non-resident adults and children will be $150 with the exception of children age three and younger. The pool will be open the weekend of June 19 and 20; daily hours will begin June 23. ESL programs break for summer The ESL Conversation Group and English Language Learning activities class that meet weekly at the Waldwick Public Library have concluded. Meetings will resume on Monday, Sept. 13 at 10:15 a.m. and Tuesday, Sept.14 at 2 p.m., respectively.
