Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • June 2, 2010 Area On June 8, registered voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots in the Republican and Democratic primary elections. Independent candidates will not appear on the primary ballot; they have until the date of the primary to announce their candidacy in the November general election. A summary of the choices in the local council elections follows. Allendale There will be no contest in the Republican primary in Allendale this year. Vince Barra, an incumbent Republican, is seeking reelection as mayor. Incumbent Republican Council Members Susan LaMonica and Ari Bernstein are seeking reelection to their seats on the borough’s governing body. Barra is a retired maritime attorney, Bernstein is a practicing attorney, and LaMonica is a retired human resources director. No Democrats have filed for election this year. In recent years, the Allendale Council, under Barra’s leadership and with the cooperation of Bernstein, LaMonica, and their peers, were able to put together a plan that deflected an application for a large townhouse complex at Orchard Commons. The team also consolidated Allendale’s administration by deleting the title of borough administrator and divided the responsibilities between the administrative official and the head of the road department. The council actively seeks other ways to cut expenses. Saddle River Two three-year seats are available on the Saddle River Borough Council this year, and Republican incumbent Karen Mastriano and newcomer Dr. Warren Boardman are seeking the voters’ endorsement. The two will run unopposed in the primary, and no Democrats have filed. Dr. Boardman, a 12-year borough resident, grew up in Manalapan, and attended Trenton State for three years before being accepted on early admission to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He graduated from UMDNJ in 1990. He is currently part of a dental group based in Ridgewood, where he practices general cosmetic dentistry. Boardman is a member of the local board of health and the Saddle River Planning Board and is vice president of the Saddle River Republican Club. He is also a member of the Valley Club, a local social group. Boardman and his wife, ophthalmologist Dr. Melanie Sinatra, have two daughters, Rachael and Alexandra. The candidate said he is committed to making the borough a better place, and will work to enhance fiscal accountability and ethics. Mastriano is now completing her first term on the borough’s governing body. As a councilwoman, she has served as liaison to the Saddle River Parks and Recreation Department and has been part of the application process for Bergen County Open Space Grant program. Through this program, the borough has made many improvements to its parks, including drainage, baseball field upgrades, boardwalk reconstruction, and the addition of the new band shell. Mastriano has also chaired and organized many community events, including Saddle River Night, Winter Festival, and the Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony. The councilwoman is chair of the borough’s Green Team. Recently, the borough became one of a small number of Sustainable Jersey Certified communities. The borough is also a charter member of the Sustainable Energy Meeting, a consortium of over 100 municipalities that purchase deregulated gas and electric. Mastriano has been active with the planning board to establish the green element of the borough’s master plan. The councilwoman is also liaison to the Saddle River Board of Education.
