Film series features Oscar winning actresses Waldwick Public Library hosts screenings of classic films of the past on Thursdays at 2 p.m. A brief introduction, setting the film in its historical context, will precede each screening. The theme for the month of June is Oscar Winning Actresses, and the schedule of screenings is as follows: June 10, “Suspicion” (1941), starring Joan Fontaine; June 17, “Anastasia” (1956), starring Ingrid Bergman; and June 24, “Three Faces of Eve” (1957), starring Joanne Woodward. These screenings are free and open to the public. Registration is not necessary, but arrival before 2 p.m. is encouraged. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Call (201) 652-5104. Scholarship Dance set The Scholarship Dance to benefit the Waldwick High School Class of 2011 will be held June 19 from 8 p.m. to midnight. Strawberry Social scheduled The Waldwick United Methodist Church at 25 Franklin Turnpike will host its annual Strawberry Social on Thursday, June 10 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on the church lawn, rain or shine. The menu will include ice cream, strawberries, a homemade biscuit or pound cake, and a beverage. The cost for a full portion is $5 per person; $2.50 for a half portion. Takeout is available. Auxiliary to host luncheon The Waldwick Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary will host its June Luncheon at Mezza Luna, 96 West Allendale Avenue, Allendale, on Wednesday, June 2 at noon. Supernatural mystery group The Waldwick Library Book Club will host a discussion of “The Angel’s Game” by Carlos Ruiz Zafon on Thursday, June 10 at 7:15 p.m. In 1920s Barcelona, a down-on-his-luck writer strikes a devil’s bargain to become a crime writer and then a beloved pulp novelist in this thrilling supernatural mystery. Copies of the book are available at the library circulation desk. The book discussion club welcomes new members and drop-ins from Waldwick and the surrounding communities. Swim team registration planned Registration for the Waldwick Swim Team will take place at Traphagen Elementary School from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26. Program on baseball parks Stanton Green, professor of anthropology at Monmouth University, will present “Baseball Parks and American Landscapes” at the Waldwick Public Library on Thursday, June 3 at 7:30 p.m. In his photographic tour of baseball parks, Professor Green will examine the complex relationship between baseball as a key aspect of American culture and the places and landscapes in which it is played. The program is free and open to the public; however, seating is limited and advance registration is required. “Baseball Parks and American Landscapes” is funded by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Quit smoking program A free smoking cessation program will be held at the Waldwick Public Library on Wednesday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m. Albert J. Ferrara Jr., coordinator of the Bergen County Partnerships for a Tobacco-Free New Jersey will offer methods and resources to use to quit smoking, and information about the health risks of tobacco, secondhand smoke, and
smokeless tobacco. Ferrara has been an employee of the county health department for 26 years, and presently works in the Office of Health Promotion. His current position is funded through a grant from the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program. He holds a B.A. from William Paterson University, and is certified by the American Cancer Society to facilitate smoking cessation programs. The Kick Butts, Kick the Habit program is free and open to the public; however, seating is limited and advance registration is recommended. Register for summer recreation programs Residents have until June 1 to pre-register and send payment for the summer recreation and tennis programs in order for both programs to be reinstated for a July 12 start date. Recreation will be held at Highlands Community Park on West Saddle River Road and at Borough Park. The tennis program will remain at Veterans Park. The registration form is on the Borough of Waldwick website under municipal forms. Forms may be completed and retuned with payment to: the Borough Administrator’s Office, 63 Franklin Turnpike. At least 200 children must register for the summer recreation program and a minimum of 80 for the tennis program for the programs to run. ESL programs break for summer The ESL Conversation Group and English Language Learning activities class that meet weekly at the Waldwick Public Library have concluded. Meetings will resume on Monday, Sept. 13 at 10:15 a.m. and Tuesday, Sept.14 at 2 p.m., respectively. The library’s ESL programs are free and open to adults who want assistance with learning and speaking English. For more information, call (201) 652-5104.
