Page 12 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • June 2, 2010 Waldwick A Waldwick resident has resorted to poetry in an effort to get relief from drainage problems in front of his home. Paul Sutherland of Harrison Avenue asked the mayor and council last week to look into ways to direct the storm water away from his property and into nearby drains. To make his point, he read the following poem, to the governing body’s and audience’s delight: “I came here tonight to complain. In light rain my catch basin won’t drain, And if it should freeze I could slip to my knees, And be madder than Hamlet the Dane. Resident hopes levity will resolve water woes “We all know that our taxes are high, Yet our catch basin simply won’t dry. Ask the engineers why They won’t fix it they sigh That we might as well wish we could fly. “From the town we all hear “just take heart”, Though your catch basin just won’t depart. Can’t you see it’s an art And we will do our part, But we just can’t decide how to start.” “I don’t want to be seen as a pain But with rain our catch basin won’t drain. If I come to complain Would I suffer disdain? Yet to leave it as is, is insane. “Whenever the clouds turn to rain Our catch basin never will drain. If we go and complain To the town we’re a pain And they give us a shrug of disdain. Sutherland said that when the street was resurfaced a number of years ago, the grading left pooling in front of his driveway. A subsequent storm drain was installed, but the pitch to that drain did not solve the problem. He explained that of the 66 feet of street between the two catch basins, an 18-ft. section in front of his house is pitched to neither of them. He said this results in a dangerous frozen strip two to three inches deep in the winter, making access to his driveway impossible. The governing body said they would refer the issue to Administrator Gary Kratz, who was absent from the meeting.
