Midland Park to purchase gasoline from borough
by Jennifer Crusco The Ho-Ho-Kus Council last week approved a resolution that will allow the borough to sell self-service gasoline and diesel fuel to the Borough of Midland Park. The agreement will become effective after the Midland Park Council approves its resolution on this matter and will continue through Dec. 31. Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Administrator Don Cirulli explained that Ho-Ho-Kus pays varying per gallon rates for gas and diesel fuel, and has agreed to sell to Midland Park at a rate of Ho-Ho-Kus’ per gallon cost plus 25 cents. He explained that the new cooperative agreement would begin with Midland Park’s purchase of electronic keys, which will allow that borough’s employees to use the gas pumps in Ho-Ho-Kus. The electronic code keys cost approximately $20 per vehicle, and allow Ho-Ho-Kus to track how much fuel is being used by each vehicle. According to the resolution, Midland Park will be asked to pay Ho-Ho-Kus within 30 days of the date billed. “In the event of any dispute among the participants as to the amount to be paid, the full amount billed shall be paid to Ho-Ho-Kus and, through subsequent negotiation, arbitration or litigation, the billed amount is determined to be incorrect, Ho-Ho-Kus shall immediately refund the difference,” the document states. Earlier this year, Midland Park sought bids from potential fuel suppliers, but no one stepped forward as a prospective gasoline supplier, and only one company offered to supply diesel fuel. The council sought the bids in an effort to control costs. Shotmeyer Brothers of Hawthorne bid 15 cents over the rack price (without taxes) of diesel fuel, which Midland Park Borough Administrator Michelle Dugan said would save about $1,500 a year, depending on how much fuel is ultimately purchased there. Fire trucks, ambulances and some DPW vehicles use diesel, but the present arrangement with Ridgewood would have to continue for the off hours since their pumps are open 24/7. At present all of Midland Park’s borough-owned vehicles - police cars, fire trucks, ambulances and DPW vehicles - fill up at the Village of Ridgewood depot on Chestnut Street. Ridgewood has been supplying fuel to borough vehicles under an inter-local services agreement for nearly 15 years, since the borough removed its own underground gasoline and diesel tanks. But the village now adds an administrative fee of 20 percent of the cost of each gallon, which at the current costs adds up to more than 40 cents per gallon.
