Local students recognized The following local students have been named to the Dean’s List at their college or university for the 2010 spring semester. Support group for men to meet LifeLines, a supportive and informative resource for prostate cancer patients and their partners in Northern Bergen County, will meet Tuesday, July 27 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River. The group was formed by prostate cancer patients to share information about available treatment and services. Structured soccer instruction offered For the first time, Upper Saddle River will offer a structured, small group soccer clinic for special needs children in kindergarten through grade two. Clinics will be held on Saturdays for 45 minutes. The players will warm-up and participate in drills and scrimmages. Breaks and other accommodations will be made. Each participant will require a parent shadow for all clinics. Players will receive a T-shirt and soccer ball. Siblings are welcome to join in the fun. VBS registration now open Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church invites children from age three through grade five to attend Vacation Bible School from Aug. 2 through 6. This year’s program, “Galactic Blast: A Cosmic Adventure Praising God,” will run from 9 a.m. to noon. All children are welcome at this interdenominational Christian program. Camp participants will board the starship Galactic Praise to see the universe and God in a whole new way. Each day’s galactic mission includes Bible adventures in the Good News Galaxy, music at Moons & Tunes, art projects at Cosmic Crafts, games at Rocket Rec, and a snack at the Astro Bistro. Preschool children will enjoy a special program designed just for them. The cost for the week is $25 for Bergen Highlands children, and $45 for all others. Summer service offered Zion Lutheran Church, located at 96 East Allendale Road in Saddle River, is offering a Thursday evening service at 7 p.m. during July and August. This brief and informal service offers worship to those planning to be away for the weekend and still wish to reserve space for God in their lives. Lions plan benefit Golf Outing The Saddle River Valley Lions Club’s annual Golf Outing will be held Monday, Sept. 13 at the Falkirk Estate and Country Club in Central Valley, New York. This event has been renamed the Herb Bodensiek Golf Classic to honor the club’s longest serving member (over 40 years). The cost of $95 includes golf, cart, allyou-can-eat barbecue on the deck, prizes, and a donation to the Lions Club campaign to fight blindness. A “shotgun” start will begin at 9:30 a.m. and barbecue and awards will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in various categories. There will also be a contest with prizes and an auction. The Saddle River Valley Lions Club pri-
marily serves the communities of Mahwah, Ramsey, Saddle River and Upper Saddle River. Members of the club come from 13 different communities. Donations sought for homeless The Saddle River Valley Junior Woman’s Club will be teaming up with Immaculate Heart Academy’s Chapter of Midnight Run to help the homeless. The Juniors are seeking donations of new travel size shampoos, lotion, mouthwash, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving creme and razors; and new men’s boxers, socks, and undershirts. The club will also accept gently used fall/winter men’s clothing and shoes. New women’s undergarments will also be accepted. Midnight Run is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a common ground between the housed and the homeless. Several times a year, Midnight Run travels into New York and hands out food, clothing, and toiletry packages to homeless individuals.
