Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • July 28, 2010 Waldwick Detective Sergeant Kevin Smith, a 25-year veteran of the Waldwick Police Department, retired from full-time duty this month. He will remain employed by the borough as a part-time technology expert. Smith, whose last day of work as the head of the department’s detective bureau was July 16, had a very brief retirement. On Monday, July 19, a violent thunderstorm knocked out the police department’s phones, radios, cameras, and computers – necessitating a call to the technologically savvy retiree. “We are very dependent on technology,” Waldwick Police Chief Mark Messner acknowledged. He stressed that the department’s secondary systems were available Smith retires from police force after 25 years and in use during the temporary outage. Smith is a graduate of Waldwick High School. He was sworn in as a member of the borough’s police force in January 1986, and graduated from the police academy later that year. Smith and now-Chief Messner were promoted to the rank of sergeant at the same time and, in 1996, Smith was assigned to the department’s one-person detective bureau. Messner lauded Smith’s efforts as a detective, pointing out the importance of being highly motivated as a one-man operation. The chief noted Smith’s skills as a law enforcement officer and as a technology expert. Over the years, Smith has collaborated with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office’s Cybercrimes Unit. He served as the borough’s Homeland Security coordinator, and helped found the Policemen’s Benevolent Association Honor Guard. The chief said Smith’s file is filled with many letters of gratitude from those he has served. In August of 1996, Smith led the investigation of the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old boy by another young boy. As the supervisor in charge of the investigation, the detective sergeant was able to make a number of decisions regarding joint efforts with the Bergen County Prosecutor and the homicide squad, and interfacing with the media. Police officials noted that Smith’s professionalism, compassion, and efficiency helped make this difficult case easier to handle. In 2003, Waldwick experienced 23 burglaries. After a thorough investigation, two suspects were arrested through the use of DNA evidence the detective found at the crime scenes. Three years later, Waldwick experi- NEED MULCH? Smith was also instrumental in solving a 2008 murder committed on East Prospect Street. This was the first murder in Waldwick in almost four decades. The detective sergeant led the investigation and ultimately charged the suspect with murder and arson. Following in Smith’s footsteps is Doug Moore, who was assigned the rank of detective sergeant in June. Moore has been training with Smith for several months, and has now officially assumed the detective’s duties.
