New lights to save borough $1,200/year
by Jennifer Crusco Last week, crews from Public Service Electric & Gas were installing new, energyefficient street lights in the Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus. Borough Administrator Don Cirulli reported that the borough’s 138 existing mercury vapor lights were being replaced with induction fluorescent lights in various locations throughout the municipality. The update, he said, is expected to save Ho-Ho-Kus approximately $1,200 a year. PSE&G touts the new fixtures as being environmentally friendly, brighter, longerlived, and less costly to operate than existing models. The induction fluorescent lights last up to 100,000 hours before they need maintenance, and use 30 to 40 percent less electricity than current models. The new lights lose less than five percent of their energy to heat, and contain significantly less mercury than the existing mercury vapor units. In addition, the replacement lights are a white light source, which allow the eye to see objects more clearly. The new lights will reportedly result in the reduction of an estimated 21,000 tons of CO2 gases and approximately 45,000 megawatt hours annually. PSE&G and US Lighting Technologies of Signal Hill, California, worked in tandem to develop a replacement for the mercury vapor street lights. PSE&G’s street lighting team and USLT’s design and engineering team’s collaboration resulted in the development of “The Jersey,” a cobra head replacement that delivers utility grade performance with contemporary styling. PSE&G is reportedly the first utility in the country to provide these new fixtures, which should save municipalities approximately $1 million in the aggregate each year. “This program is a win-win for the communities we serve,” said PSE&G President and Chief Operating Officer Ralph LaRossa. “It brings a new green source of lighting to our neighborhoods as it provides some relief to municipal budgets.” The utility is investing $50 million to provide the energy efficient street lighting to the 220 municipalities in its service area. The lighting upgrade is part of a $700 million capital program designed to stimulate the economy and provide jobs by accelerating electric and gas infrastructure projects. PSE&G notes that there are no upfront costs or charges to municipalities to participate in the replacement program.
