Norma S. Gindes, MSW, has been appointed executive director of the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, Inc. BVMI provides free primary and preventive medical care to Bergen County residents who are working, earn between 100 percent and 200 percent of the prevailing federal poverty guideline and have no health insurance or the means to pay for care. Gindes has over 20 years of experience working as a community affairs and philanthropic professional in the non-profit sector with particular expertise in fundraising, program development, project management, strategic planning, and grant making. She comes to BVMI from the United Hospital Fund, a health services, research, and philanthropic organization addressing critical issues affecting healthcare in New York. In making the announcement, Bernard Weinstein, chairman of BVMI’s board of trustees stated that Gindes’ leadership will be an asset across the organization. “The founders of BVMI, board members, our generous donors, countless volunteers, and the core medical staff have worked tirelessly to establish the BVMI Healthcare Center. Norma’s proven record of executive excellence and organizational management is exactly what BVMI needs now for sustainability and growth,” said Weinstein.
Gindes named executive director of BVMI
Gindes and her family have resided in Bergen County for almost 40 years. Formerly of Teaneck, she is now a resident of Hackensack. Known for participation in community and commitment to social responsibility, she is looking forward to moving BVMI to the next level of increased visibility and philanthropic support which will enable BVMI to serve the almost 20,000 Bergen County residents who meet eligibility criteria. BVMI is totally dependent on contributed income from individuals, business, and foundation grants. “The opportunity to work with those who had the vision and have made the BVMI Healthcare Center a reality is a special honor,” said Gindes. “In a very short period of time, I have witnessed the ‘culture of caring’ expressed by BVMI’s healthcare professionals and volunteers, and the deep gratitude of those patients who are served. I look forward to reaching BVMI’s potential to improve the health status of our neighbors in need and to provide increased access to healthcare to the most vulnerable. It is very exciting and gratifying to be working in partnership with board members, volunteers, and staff at this important time in the organization’s development.” The BVMI Healthcare Center is located at 241 Moore Street, Hackensack.
