Waldwick July 14, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 Officials believe hope is in sight for White’s Pond Whites Pond in Waldwick may be getting much needed improvements at a cost the town can afford. The borough recently received a proposal from a company that would remove weed and algae growth and debris to increase the depth of the water along the shoreline and use chemicals to control the offending algae. Princeton Hydro, LLC management program would provide weed and algae control for the pond at the heart of Borough Park on an as-needed basis. Clean up of the 7.8 acre pond would require a three-step process: the collection of organic material throughout the pond using an amphibious harvester machine; dumping of the material at the edge of the pond to be subsequently removed by the Waldwick DPW; and applying algeacides when needed to control the future algae growth. “This process would stabilize the lake, improve the water quality, and aesthetically be a pride,” Borough Administrator Gary Kratz told the mayor and council last week. “It may take a couple of years, but the price tag will be only pennies. This may be the best means at hand to solve the problem,” he added. Kratz said that the borough would be able to use Open Space Trust Fund moneys to fund the operation. Due to the amount of weed growth now in the pond and the amount of time required to receive an approved NJDEP aquatic pesticide permit, the company proposes to use a fast-acting herbicide for submerged weed growth, with half of the lake treated at each application. Any drinking and irrigation restrictions associated with the herbicide would be posted. Proposed algeacides are not toxic to fish, specifically trout, and no water restrictions are needed. Products are EPA-registered and all applications would be conducted by NJDEP licensed aquatic pesticide applicators and operators. The mechanical removal of weeds, algae, floating debris and accumulated leaf litter would be done with an amphibious harvester/collector machine while waiting for the NJDEP aquatic pesticide permit approval, which could take from six to eight weeks, according to the proposal. Removal of the organic matter is not the same as dredging, since no appreciable amount of sediment is removed; therefore, no NJDEP permits are required. Using DPW personnel to remove the material from the pond’s edge is a cost-effective means of maximizing Princeton Hydro’s daily productivity. The company charges $2,200 per day for its harvester, not including labor or materials or loading and disposal of material dumped on the shoreline into a dumpster. Each algaecide application is $630, with $745 for a herbicide application. Kratz said that a number of years ago the borough had made arrangements to dump materials dredged from the pond at Overpeck Park free of charge, but that the cost of transporting the sediment there would have neared $3 million. “It didn’t get done,” he said. Aerators installed in the pond did the job for a while, but he said they are constantly burning out as they suck the sediment from the shallow bottom. This led to seeking the chemical alternative, Kratz said. The council is expected to discuss the proposal at its next work session. But STILL can’t lose that Tummy or Cellulite?
