Ho-Ho-Kus January 27, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 9 Council supports resident’s pursuit of race track signs by Jennifer Crusco The Ho-Ho-Kus Council has given Arbor Drive resident Nancy Pianfetti the green light to proceed with her plans to raise funds for three signs that will mark the location of the old race track, which operated in the borough from the 1870s through 1938. Pianfetti approached the council last week accompanied by her husband Kevin and Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Historian John Hanlon. She told the council that her goal is to acknowledge the history of the race track, and she asked for the council’s permission to approach residents to ask for donations for the sign project. Pianfetti asked if a donation box could be placed in borough hall, and said she plans to request funds at her neighborhood’s block party. Acknowledging that Race Track Road is a county thoroughfare, the resident said her plans call for the installation of two signs at Arbor Drive and another at Bernard Place. Asked what material would be used for the signs, Pianfetti said metal and wood might be used. She explained that, if an Eagle Scout candidate agrees to create one of the signs, that piece might be made of wood. “The verbiage would have to be approved,” Hanlon said, adding that the borough engineer would have to oversee the installation of the signs. Councilman Gordon Hamm asked who would maintain the signs, but Mayor Thomas Randall said the cast metal historical style signs are relatively low maintenance. The signs could be two feet by three feet in size, Pianfetti said, noting that she is still researching the potential costs. Hanlon added, “The signs are expensive. It could be $3,000 to $5,000 each for the cast metal signage.” Mayor Randall and those council members present agreed that Pianfetti’s request is worthwhile. Randall added, ‘We will want to tweak the design.” Last fall, Pianfetti circulated a petition and collected signatures of residents who also support the cause to commemorate the old track, which gave Race Track Road its name. The Pianfettis have lived in the grandstand area of the former race track since 1976. Their two sons also reside on the former race track, one in the picnic area on Addison Place and one on the track on Spruce Place.
