Ho-Ho-Kus
Foundation seeks donations to support gala fundraiser
The Ho-Ho-Kus Education Foundation’s Annual Auction Gala and Dinner Dance will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Park Ridge Marriott. The theme for this year’s event is “Unlocking the Door to Your Child’s Future with the Key to Success.” This is the education foundation’s primary fundraising event of the year, with all proceeds from the auction funding a variety of teacher-requested grants and school-wide initiatives. The foundation is seeking tax-deductible auction items and cash donations to help fund these grants. The Ho-Ho-Kus Education Foundation is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit charitable organization managed by an independent board of trustees comprised of local residents. The foundation works to supplement public financing of the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School by enhancing the educational experience of the entire student population. The foundation’s board works with the school’s administration to evaluate grant requests from individual teachers, and school-wide initiatives developed by the administration from The Ho-Ho-Kus School. Grants are allocated to programs that are deemed to significantly enhance the educational experience of students in one or more of the following disciplines: science, math, language arts, history, social studies, world languages, the arts (including music, and fine and performance arts), and citizenship. Additional consideration is given to best ensure that funds are distributed across a diversity of grades and learning styles. The Ho-Ho-Kus Education Foundation has awarded nearly $800,000 in grants since the organization was created in 1992. For more information visit www. HoHoKus.org.
Ho-Ho-Kus race track
(continued from page 9) Councilman John Mongelli asked if there are other borough landmarks that should be commemorated with similar signs. Hanlon quickly mentioned the former trolley line and the former site of the Washington Elm. The borough’s race track, which became a state landmark, had been a 23acre farm owned by Samuel Banta. The property was developed as a track in the 1870s. Over the years, the track was used by for county fairs, and for horse, motorcycle, and car races. In the 1890s, the property was used by the North Jersey Agricultural and Driving Association, which built the grandstand and improved the half-mile track. Last week, Hanlon told the council the first night baseball game was played on the property. He also pointed out that the first plane to make a local air mail delivery left from the track in Ho-Ho-Kus and ultimately delivered mail to the Ridgewood YMCA property on Oak Street. Pilot Joseph Richter reportedly made the trip in August 1912, according to “Background of Ho-Ho-Kus History.” Auto races were held on the site between 1919 and 1938. The council closed the track in 1938 after a July 4 accident that claimed a child’s life and injured 12 others. The property was developed for its current residential use in 1950-51.
