Learn how to raise a reader Parents who want to instill a lifelong love of reading in their children are welcome to attend “How to Raise a Reader” at the Upper Saddle River Library. Saddle River Day School’s Eileen F. Lambert will make this presentation at 7 p.m. on Jan. 19 in the auditorium at the library, 245 Lake Street in Upper Saddle River. Lambert will share her insight into the keys to developing lifelong readers, especially in our technology-based environment. The public is invited to attend this free presentation. New exercise class forms A new exercise class is being offered at the Upper Saddle River Library: Strengthen, Tone and Stretch will begin Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. The cost for the introductory fourweek session is $30 for Upper Saddle River cardholders; $40 for cardholders from other Bergen County municipalities. Isometric exercises and light weights and high reps will be combined with Pilates movements, toning bands, and therapeutic stretches. The class will target all major muscle groups and create longer, leaner muscles. Challenges and modifications will make this class appropriate for those at all fitness levels. Participants should bring two or three pound weights and a mat. Instructor Winnie Dunn is a certified personal trainer. The Upper Saddle River Library is located at 245 Lake Street. Two school board seats available The Upper Saddle River Board of Education will have two vacancies in the April 20 school election. Each opening is for a three-year term. Candidates may file a petition with the local school board in order to be placed on the ballot. The deadline for filing a petition is 4 p.m. Monday, March 1. The Upper Saddle River Board of Edu-
cation will meet on Monday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. The meeting will be held in the multimedia center of the Cavallini School, 392 West Saddle River Road, Upper Saddle River. Free swine flu clinic set The Northwest Bergen Regional Health Commission has scheduled a free H1N1 clinic for Upper Saddle River residents on Wednesday, Jan. 27 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Church of the Presentation, 271 West Saddle River Road, Upper Saddle River. Any age group is welcome. Schedule an appointment at www.nwbrhc.org or by calling (201) 445-7217. Scheduling is available as of Jan. 20. Register for baseball and softball Online registration is underway for the 2010 Ho-Ho-Kus/Saddle River Baseball and Softball Season. Residents of Ho-HoKus and Saddle River may sign up their children in grades kindergarten through nine by accessing the HHK/SR Baseball and Softball Association website at http:// www.hhksrbsa.com/. The cost for registration is $90 for children in kindergarten and first grade, and $115 for children in grades two through nine. Registration ends Feb. 1. Home theater program offered The next session of the Upper Saddle River Library’s Keeping up with Technology Series will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. Instructor Sam Argintar, IT specialist, will offer information on how to select and install equipment for a home theater. Transform old T-shirts into a quilt Make a quilt with T-shirts at the Upper Saddle River Library. Instruction will begin Jan. 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. Retired teacher and award winning quilter Kathleen Davis will teach a six-session class for five to 10 people that will result in a completed (or nearly completed) quilt that uses up to 15 Tshirts. Recently the Ho-Ho-Kus/Saddle River Fourth Grade Boys Travel Basketball team claimed first place in the Mike Blake Tip Off Tournament held in Upper Saddle River. During the weekend tournament, the boys won over Ramsey, River Edge and Allendale to get to the finals. They beat Pequannock 28-19 in the finals.
