Home theater program offered The next session of the Upper Saddle River Library’s Keeping up with Technology Series will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. Instructor Sam Argintar, IT specialist, will offer information on how to select and install equipment for a home theater. Registration is required. The program is open to library cardholders in Bergen County. To register, or for more information, call (201) 327-2583. Transform old T-shirts into a quilt Make a quilt with T-shirts at the Upper Saddle River Library. Instruction will begin Jan. 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. Retired teacher and award winning quilter Kathleen Davis will teach a six-session class for five to 10 people that will result in a completed (or nearly completed) quilt that uses up to 15 T-shirts. Registered participants will be sent a supply list. The fee is $50 for USR cardholders; $60 for out-of-town cardholders. New exercise class forms A new exercise class is being offered at the Upper Saddle River Library: Strengthen, Tone and Stretch will begin Jan.
Robert T. Regan, Esq., who serves as borough attorney for Upper Saddle River, Midland Park, and Harrington Park, recently received the Fred G. Stickel Memorial Award for excellence in public sector and municipal law. “I was humbled and gratified to receive the award,” Regan said of the honor. Regan has been an attorney for over 30 years. He began his service to the Borough of Upper Saddle River in 1989 and has been Midland Park’s attorney since 1994. He was recently named to the attorney’s post in Harrington Park. In addition to his service as a borough attorney in these municipalities, he serves as the planning board attorney in Montvale, Norwood, and Old Tappan. Regan has been a trustee of the New Jersey Institute of Local Government Attorneys for 10 years. He and his wife, Marilyn, are residents of Upper Saddle River. Singles plan activities The Singles Ministry at the Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River invites singles who are age 40+ to join the group for two upcoming events. A pizza and music party is planned for Saturday, Jan. 16, from 7:30 to11 p.m. in the community room. Tickets are $10 and include pizza, two beverages, munchies, and dessert. Additional drinks will be available for purchase. Volunteers are needed to help with the 6 p.m. setup, serving, and cleanup. Volunteer may RSVP to Cynthia at cynthiagjoyce@gmail.com. Parents invited to kindergarten orientation The Upper Saddle River School District has planned a kindergarten orientation for parents of kindergarten-age children. The event will be held Jan. 20 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Travers Multipurpose Room at Reynolds School. Registration procedures, a typical day in kindergarten, and curriculum will be discussed. It is essential that the district receive an accurate count of incoming kindergarten students. In order to be eligible for kindergarten in fall 2010, a child must be five years old on or before Oct. 1, 2010.
Local attorney receives award
Bogert School fifth grade students in Mrs. Palatnek’s class participated in an author study of non-fiction writer Peter Sis. Throughout the unit they read a variety of his pieces, frequently corresponded with the author, and wrote essays about what makes him a unique author of nonfiction.
25 at 10 a.m. The cost for the introductory four-week session is $30 for Upper Saddle River cardholders; $40 for cardholders from other Bergen County municipalities. Isometric exercises and light weights and high reps will be combined with Pilates movements, toning bands, and therapeutic stretches. The class will target all major muscle groups and create longer, leaner muscles. Challenges and modifications will make this class appropriate for those at all fitness levels. Participants should bring two or three pound weights and a mat. Instructor Winnie Dunn is a certified personal trainer. The library is located at 245 Lake Street. Club to hold Movie Day The Saddle River Valley Junior Woman’s Club will hold Movie Day at the Ramsey Cinema on Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 18. The club will see “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.” Drop-off is at 9:30 a.m.; the movie starts at 10 a.m. Pick-up is promptly at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $7, which includes a buttered bagel and a bottle of water. The concession stand also will be open. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Upper Saddle River Library.
