Lennon named council president
by Jennifer Crusco Last week, the Ho-Ho-Kus Council reorganized for the New Year with Maryellen Lennon as president of the governing body. First elected to the council in 2005, Lennon won a second term in 2008. The council seat is an extension of this active resident’s community service. Lennon has resided in the borough since 1978 and quickly busied herself with parenting, teaching, and volunteering. She arrived in Ho-Ho-Kus shortly before the birth of her daughter, the first of her five children. She was a substitute teacher at Ho-Ho-Kus Public School and began her own nursery program, which allowed her to be available to her own children while keeping her teaching skills sharp. Her community involvement has also included work with the Contemporary Club, raising funds for the Youth Activities Council, leading a Girl Scout troop, teaching CCD at Saint Gabriel’s Church, and teaching the Red Cross babysitting course. Raised in Brooklyn, New York, Lennon is a graduate of Saint Xavier High School and Saint Joseph’s College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in child studies. She has also pursued graduate work in speech pathology at New York University. When she began searching for a home in Bergen County, Lennon found Ho-Ho-Kus to be the best of all worlds. During her tenure on the council, Lennon has served in a variety of capacities, including as chair of the Community Relations Committee. Councilman Doug Troast and Kevin Crossley, both of whom won reelection in November 2009, were also sworn in to their new terms on the governing body. Crossley has been a council member since 2002. He is managing partner and chief operating officer of Club Agency Insurance Brokerage, LLC, in Garden City, New York. He is past president of the Tri-County Independent Insurance Agents Association of Nassau, Queens, and Kings counties. Troast joined the council in 2000. He also served three years on the borough’s zoning board. He is chief executive officer of the John Troast Group, a construction and real estate development company.
