Page 8 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • February 24, 2010 Area Glen Rock hosts three discussions about going green The Glen Rock Library, 315 Rock Road in Glen Rock, will host a series of three panel discussions about “How to Live in a Healthy and Green Environment: Your Home.” The discussions will be offered on the first Tuesday of March, April, and May at 7:30 p.m. The program is being produced by Glen Rock resident Andy Cushen, a real estate consultant and certified ecobroker. The moderator for all three discussions will be Barrie Peterson. On Tuesday, March 2, the topic will be “Healthy Air, Healthy Home.” This panel will consist of licensed professionals who use specialized equipment to measure the interior air quality of a home. IAQ is directly related to the incidence of allergies, asthma, and other respiratory ailments. The discussion will also cover mold. Licensed mold reduction specialists with the National Association of Mold Professionals will discuss the causes of mold and how to reduce its presence to a minimum. Panelists will also discuss the many materials and commonly used household products that contain harmful chemicals and/or give off gases which can result in serous illnesses over time. Numerous handouts from the EPA and other government and private agencies will be available for all attendees. “Cut Your Energy Bills by as Much as 30 Percent” will be discussed on Tuesday, April 6. Learn about HERS – the Home Energy Rating System, and discover how these ratings can be improved. Older homes, and many newer ones, have inadequate insulation (“R” Value) and windows with inadequate “E” Ratings (i.e. low emittance coating). Leaky doors, windows, and ducts can seriously increase energy costs. Taking corrective measures can often result in savings of 30 percent off your energy bills. The panel will include a mortgage expert who will discuss special types of mortgages available to those who buy homes with high HERS ratings, and tax credits that help pay for upgrades to insulation, windows and doors, roofs, HVAC equipment, and water heaters. Informative handouts and useful lists of websites will be available. The third discussion will be Tuesday, May 4. “Alternative Energy Sources for the Home” will be presented by licensed professionals knowledgeable about solar, wind, and geothermal energy. Tax credits and energy suppliers’ credits are available for all of these energy-generating methods. Learn about the costs and types of installations available. A selection of handouts will be available for all attendees. Bill expands emergency management authority Legislation sponsored by New Jersey Senate Assistant Majority Leader John A. Girgenti to expand municipal emergency management authority in requesting assistance outside their territorial jurisdiction, was unanimously approved by the Senate Law & Public Safety Committee. “This measure is another step towards strengthening the protection of New Jersey citizens,” said Senator Girgenti, D-Bergen and Passaic. “Emergencies require rapid response; and the closest and most capable departments should be permitted to act immediately.” The bill, S-501, would expand the authority of emergency management departments in requesting assistance outside a municipality’s territorial jurisdiction. Under the provisions of the bill, first responders would not be confined to their specific territorial jurisdictions when they assist another municipality and other emergency workers. The bill will also increase the statutory protection of emergency management personnel tantamount to the members of the requesting municipal police force and fire department. “Current law already allows neighboring municipalities to create mutual aid plans between themselves in the event of an emergency,” said Senator Girgenti. “This measure would expand these plans statewide. The more flexible we are during emergencies, the greater our chances of successfully getting through a crisis. The focus needs to be on assistance.” The measure now heads to the full Senate for consideration. Remodeling Renovations & Repairs www.hawthornehandyman.com Keeping Families Warm Since 1929. 973-949-4431 Serving All Your Home Heating Needs CHECK OUR WEBSITE Prompt, Reliable Service You Can Depend On, Plus The Personal Attention You Deserve. • Oil Heat Systems Serviced & Installed • Automatic Fuel Oil Deliveries • Tank Insurance Available Cash ts Discougn il n O On Heati s Deliverie 24 Hour Emergency 201-891-1000 Service www.waldwickchamber.com Just as you are reading this ad, others are reading your ad.
