The Waldwick Council recently introduced Ordinance 4-10, which would update the borough’s fees for vehicle towing services and storage. A public hearing on this ordinance will be held at the Feb. 23 council meeting, at which time the measure will also be considered for final approval. Representatives from the borough’s three licensed towing companies, Citywide, All Points, and Rondale, approached Waldwick officials and asked them to update the towing regulations. “The insurance companies were refusing to pay for towing services they performed if the service and cost were not listed in the borough ordinance,” Assistant Borough Administrator Jordan Battisti explained. “This was the impetus to revisit the ordinance and increase the licensing fee along with some other services to bring it up to par with surrounding municipalities. This ordinance has not been touched for at least five years.” One of the charges that would increase under the updated ordinance is the licens-

ing fee the towing companies pay to be on the borough’s roster. That charge would rise from the current rate of $75 to $300. The amended ordinance also includes a proposed charge of $100 for wheel lift or flatbed towing services anywhere within the borough or to a storage yard for a twoaxle vehicle that weighs 8,000 pounds or less. A $4 per mile charge would be added for wheel lift service, and $35 would be charged for each additional axle. Towing charges for vehicles of 8,001 to 16,000 pounds would be $250. Motorcycles would be charged at a rate of $100. Heavy duty towing charges, which apply to vehicles that weigh 16,001 pounds or more, would be $325 per hour with a one hour minimum, $45 for driveshaft removal, and $45 for brake release. The hourly rate for use of an air cushion device in a heavy-duty recovery would be $550. Storage fees would be $45 for vehicles under 10,000 pounds that are being kept inside a building or storage facility, and would include a charge of $20 per additional axle per day. Fees for vehicles stored outside a secure storage facility would be $35 a day for vehicles under 10,000 pounds, $75 per day for vehicles over 10,000 pounds, $100 for a tandem axle truck, and $140 for a tractor trailer. Emergency road service, including jump starts, tire changes, and transporting up to two gallons of fuel, would be billed at $60. However, if a tow results, there would be no charge for road service except for the cost of any fuel poured into the vehicle’s gas tank. The fee for responding to a vehicle lockout would be $75. Current towing charges, which would be amended by the Ordinance 4-10, are not to exceed $85 for automobiles and motorcycles towed between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, not to exceed $95 for cars on
holidays, weekends, and weekdays at any other hour. Wheel lift and flatbed service fees are not to exceed $85 during 8 and 6 and not to exceed $95 at other times. Trucks registered with a gross vehicle weight between 5,000 and 10,000 pounds are currently charged a towing fee that cannot exceed $110. Trucks that exceed 10,000 pounds, buses, tractor trailers, and other heavy equipment are towed at a rate that cannot exceed $250 per hour. Fixed daily charges for storage of motor vehicles towed upon police department notification are currently $25 per day for impounded, wrecked, or disabled vehicles (including motorcycles), and $75 per day for trucks in excess of 10,000 pounds. Copies of Ordinance 4-10 are available at borough hall.

Borough seeks CERT volunteers
The Borough of Waldwick Office of Emergency Management and the Waldwick Police Department are asking citizens to volunteer their services to help safeguard the country, the communities, their families, and themselves by volunteering to participate in the Community Emergency Response Team program. CERT training consists of 20 hours of instruction over an eight-week period. Classes are taught by emergency responders, including firefighters, emergency medical services, and law enforcement personnel from the community. At the completion of the training program, basic CERT safety equipment will be issued to each successful participant. Anyone who is interested may contact Sergeant Frank Paccione at the Waldwick Police Department for an application and class schedule. Call (201) 652-5700 or email Fpaccione@waldwicknj.org
