David A. Burgess of Allendale died Feb. 17. He was 86. He was a U.S. Army Signal Corps veteran of WWII and the Korean War. Before retiring in 1988, he was a personnel manager with American Cyanamid Company in Wayne, where he was employed for 47 years. He was chairman of the Allendale Zoning Board of Adjustment for 13 years and was president of Allendale Senior Housing from its inception until 2004. He was a former committee member of Boy Scout Troop 59 in Allendale where he was review representative of the Bergen County Boy Scouts. He was associated with Scouting in Bergen County for 25 years. He was a member of the Church of the Epiphany in Allendale. He is survived by his son Edward H. of Cincinnati, Ohio, one grandson and one great grandson. He was predeceased by his wife Marilyn, and his sister Doris Hollrock. Arrangements were made by Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff. He was president of Major Products Company of Little Ferry, a company he established in 1951. He is survived by his wife Susan, his children Daniel of Hillsdale, and Valerie of Hoboken, one granddaughter, and his siblings Ralph of Secaucus and Anne Marie DiPaola of Emerson. Donald Payne Fisher of Ho-Ho-Kus died Feb. 14. He was 85. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He was a member of the Ho-Ho-Kus Fire Department. He is survived by his children Jacqueline Fisher-Dunnegan, Jeffrey Fisher, Steven Fisher, and seven grandchildren. Arrangements were made by Feeney Funeral Home in Ridgewood. William H. Fleming of Ramsey died Feb. 13. He was 60. He was a U.S. Vietnam War veteran. Before retiring, he was employed with the Ramsey Road Department. He was a member of the Ramsey Volunteer Fire Department for 37 years. He is survived by his cousins Shirley Magnuson, Patricia Hartig, Elsie Gannon, Ruth DeLeon, Barbara Chatier, and Clarence Gannon, and his niece Mary Gannon. Before retiring in 1997, he was a food chemist with Nabisco in Fair Lawn and East Hanover. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood. He was a volunteer with the Oakland Recreation Baseball and Softball programs and at Eva’s Kitchen. He is survived by his wife Jill Critchley of Ridgewood, his children Kevin Leibfred Jr. of Paterson, Michael Leibfred of Oakland, Jason Leibfred of Massachusetts, Matthew Leibfred of Ridgewood, stepchildren David and Joel Schwartz of Ridgewood, and three grandchildren. Before retiring in 2006, he was vice president of Risk Management with RICOH Corporation in Fairfield. He was an adjunct professor at Caldwell College and on its Business Advisory Council. He was a member of the U.S. Reserve and a former member of the Franklin Lakes Recreation. He was a parishioner of Most Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church in Franklin Lakes. He is survived by his wife Maryann Miko (nee Shear) of Franklin Lakes, his children Christopher Jay Miko of Upper Saddle River, Laurena Mary Efrusy of Ringwood, and four grandchildren. Joseph Monti of Lavallette, formerly of Union City and Ridgewood, died Feb. 16. He was a retired educator, having taught history in Toms River High School East and served as history department supervisor at Hasbrouck Heights High School. He was the recipient of many awards including the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Outstanding Teacher of American History in New Jersey, The Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge’s Honor Certificate for Outstanding Contributions to Education, The American Ex-Prisoners of War Association’s Certificate of Appreciation, and a New Jersey Legislature resolution for his efforts in teaching about the Armenian genocide. He received the Outstanding Citizenship Award by the Sons of the American Revolution. He was included four times in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers,” and was honored by the Korean War Veterans of Ocean County with a certificate of appreciation for having the war remembered. He was named Teacher of the Year by the Toms River and Ocean County VFW, and was the New Jersey Marine Corps League’s Man

of the Year. He received the Patriotism and Distinguished Service Awards and the Distinguished Citizen Medal from the Marine Corps League. He received the Chapel of Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award and Bronze Medallion Award from the Vietnam Veterans of America. He is survived by his sister Rosanne Monti Pfeiffer, and one niece. He was predeceased by his parents Dorothy and Frank Monti. Arrangements were made by Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, Lavallette. Dr. Nolan Sommer, formerly of Franklin Lakes, died Feb. 8. He was 90. Before retiring in 1978, he was executive vice president and director of American Cyanamid after 34 years of service. He received the 1968 Honor Award of the Commercial Chemical Development Association. He served as Chairman of the Board at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, and as vice chairman of the New Jersey Health Care Administration Board. He was a recipient of the 1989 West Bergen Mental Health and the 1992 New Jersey Hospital Association distinguished service awards. He is survived by his wife Eula, his children Nancy Kasselmann of Roswell, Georgia, Suzanne Brakebill of Memphis, Tennessee, Robert of Dayton, Ohio, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Gloria and his son Bradford. Madeline Turrin, nee Miceli, of Upper Saddle River died Feb. 17. She was 85. She was a member of the Saddle River Woman’s Club and the Senior Center of Midland Park. She was a parishioner of the Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River. She is survived by her children Frances Tepper of Upper Saddle River, and Andrew Turrin, two grandchildren, and her companion Patrick O’Leary. She was predeceased by her husband Oswald Turrin. Lenten seminar to begin Rev. David Harwood of Archer United Methodist Church, 37 East Allendale Road, will present “The Last Week,” a six-week Lenten seminar, which will cover the day by day Biblical account of what was going on in Jesus’ mind during the last week. Rev. Harwood will discuss Jesus’ decision to face the cross and how that decision became crystallized. The resource for this seminar is Marcus Borg and John Crossan’s “The Last Week.” The seminar is open to all and will meet on Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 25.
