PSE&G grant will upgrade HVAC at borough garage
Waldwick has received an additional energy efficiency grant from Public Service Electric and Gas. Co. to replace heating/ventilating/air conditioning units at the public works garage on Industrial Avenue. Work is expected to get under way this week to install energy-efficient lighting fixtures at the 20-year-old garage under an earlier grant. The borough was awarded the lighting and HVAC grants following an energy audit prepared by PSE&G last year. The free audit, part of the utility’s “Direct Install” energy efficiency economic stimulus initiative, is funded with federal moneys. It was commissioned by the council last September to get in on the ground floor of the offer before the $25 million allocated to the program was depleted. The initial audit determined that the HVAC units were not inefficient enough to qualify, according to Waldwick’s Assistant Borough Administrator Jordan Battisti. When Borough Administrator Gary Kratz appealed the decision, a second look by PSE&G determined that the project did indeed meet the grant requirements, Battisti said. Public Service estimates the cost of both projects at $61,148. The borough’s share will be $6,535 for the lights and $5,695 for the two HVAC roof-top units. Work is set to start as soon as the units are received from the manufacturer, Battisti said. Under the terms of the grant, PSE&G will pay 100 percent of the cost upfront. The borough will repay 20 percent of the total out of the savings realized from the upgrades, interest free. The retrofitting is expected to save the borough about $4,000 a year in electricity and maintenance costs, with another $4,758 in HVAC costs. Kratz had previously estimated that with the anticipated savings, the borough would recoup its investment in less than two years. PSE&G did a survey of all the borough-owned buildings but determined that there would be no real savings from retrofitting the other facilities, since they are newer and relatively energy efficient, according to Kratz.
Jeers and applause for the Academy Awards
Film enthusiast Bill Levy will present, “Jeers and Applause for the Academy Awards,” at the Waldwick Public Library on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. Ten days before the airing of the 82nd annual Academy Awards, Levy will discuss positive and negative views of the Oscars, and examine certain long-term preferences of the Academy’s voting members that help determine the winners. The Academy’s move to nominate 10 films this year, instead of the traditional five, makes room for more popular films, a more interesting horse race, and the possibility of a March surprise. Levy, a classic film expert, writes “Forgotten Gems,” a column on the films of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s for the national periodical “Movie Collector’s World,” and is a contributor to “Fifty Plus,” a monthly publication for seniors. Levy has a repertoire of more than 30 programs on the films and stars of Hollywood’s Golden Era. The program, sponsored by the Friends of the Waldwick Library, is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and pre-registration is recommended. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Call (201) 652-5104.
