Sock Hop set Hillside and Brookside school families are invited to the Brookside Hillside Music Association’s Family Sock Hop on Friday, March 12. The event will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Brookside School. There will be music, contests and refreshments available for purchase. The cost is $5 per person or $20 per family. All proceeds will help pay production costs for the spring musical, “Grease,” and will support the BHMAA. For more information, visit www. BHMAA.org. AWC Fashion Show tickets available Tickets are now available for the Allendale Woman’s Club 2010 Fashion Show, “Fashion With Heart,” a benefit for The Valley Hospital Center for Women’s Heart Health and other local charities. The event will take place on Wednesday, April 7 at 6:30 p.m. at Seasons in Washington Township. The evening will feature a cocktail reception with an open bar and gourmet dinner, an auction, gift basket prizes, and a fashion show sponsored by Fig Leaf Boutique in Garfield. The Allendale Woman’s Club has designated the Center for Women’s Heart Health as the primary beneficiary of its Fashion Show and will donate half of all proceeds to the organization. Since heart disease is now the leading cause of death among women, the center is dedicated to awareness, education, and prevention of this disease. Among its many outreach programs, the center offers free comprehensive risk assessments to women in the community. Chamber plans dinner meeting The Allendale Chamber of Commerce will host a dinner meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at Terrie O’Connor Realtors, 75 West Allendale Avenue. Board of education to meet The Allendale Board of Education will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 8 p.m. at the Brookside School library, 100 Brookside Avenue. Gallagher to perform Children’s entertainer Kurt Gallagher is scheduled to perform on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m. Children ages two through seven are invited to sing along as Gallagher performs his zany musical repertoire. The event, which is being presented by the Allendale Woman’s Club, is free for Allendale residents. The program will be held at the Allendale Borough Hall upstairs meeting room. Space is limited to the first 50 children and pre-registration is required. Parents are required to stay with their children during the performance. Register for spring sports Registration for the Allendale Recreation Commission’s spring sports, including tee ball, baseball, softball, and kickball, has begun and will continue through Feb. 15. The recreation programs are dependent upon parental involvement; anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should contact his or her child’s coach. Brookside fourth and fifth grade students were given the opportunity, by the Brookside Hillside Music and Arts Association, to take part in a drama program under the direction of Brenda DeCesare. Students learned acting techniques and styles which recently ended with students performing scenes for friends and family.

Kindergarten orientation set Orientation for parents of children who will be entering kindergarten in September 2010 will be held on Thursday, March 4 at 7 p.m. in the Hillside School all-purpose room. This program provides parents with an overview of the Hillside kindergarten program and curriculum. Kindergarten registration will take place on Monday, March 8 for pupils whose last names begin with A through M, and Tuesday, March 9 for those with last names beginning with N through Z. Registration time will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at Hillside School. Parents must bring proof of child’s birth, such as a birth or baptismal certificate or
passport, a copy of your child’s immunization history, and proof of residency (copy of lease, driver’s license, utility bill, etc.) to registration. Children may be enrolled in kindergarten if they are five years of age by Oct. 1 of the year they will begin school. Should a child be six years of age or older as of Oct. 1, 2010, a kindergarten screening date will be scheduled, as per board of education policy. Based on the screening results, parents will be advised as to the placement of a child in either kindergarten or in first grade. All children entering kindergarten must have a physical dated after Jan. 1, 2010, and all immunizations must be upto-date as required by the State of New Jersey. The school nurse will be present at registration to answer health questions and to review the children’s records. The snow date for the orientation will be on Monday, March 8 at 7 p.m. Snow date for registration will be from 9 to 11 a.m., on Monday, March 15 for pupils whose last name begins with A through M and Tuesday, March 16 for pupils with last names beginning with N through Z.
