Harry Norton reappointed as municipal judge
by Jennifer Crusco Harry Norton has been reappointed as judge of the Ho-Ho-Kus Municipal Court. Voting at last week’s public council session, the borough’s governing body approved Judge Norton’s new three-year term, which began Jan. 26 and will continue until Jan. 26, 2012. The resolution to approve the appointment was originally part of a consent agenda, but Mayor Thomas Randall asked that this item be voted separately, to allow Councilman Doug Troast to abstain, which he did. Troast has reportedly worked with one of Judge Norton’s associates. Norton is a graduate of Lafayette College and of Seton Hall Law School. He has been admitted to the bar in New Jersey and New York. He has also been admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. District Court. When he began his legal career, Norton was an appellate court clerk. From 1978-83, he was assistant prosecutor for Bergen County, trial section. He practiced law at Evans Hand from 1983-1997, and was a partner in that firm from 1987-97. In 1997, he branched off and formed Norton, Sheehy, Higgins, and Rosa. The same year, he replaced Judge Letcher as the municipal court judge in Ho-Ho-Kus. Norton is also municipal court judge in the Borough of Upper Saddle River and in the Borough of Allendale, which partners with Ho-Ho-Kus in the administration of its municipal court system. Norton was recently named court judge in Montvale. The Ho-Ho-Kus Council has also approved a consent resolution regarding the interlocal court agreement between Ho-Ho-Kus and Allendale. According to the resolution, Ho-Ho-Kus will contribute 65 percent of the cost and Allendale will contribute 35 percent of the cost. In other business, the council approved a resolution that will allow Ho-Ho-Kus and the Borough of Fair Lawn to share the services of a health officer for a term beginning Jan. 26, 2010 and expiring on Jan. 26, 2011. Each municipality will pay $4,535 for the service, according to that resolution.
