Waldwick DPW and non-union employees will be contributing to their health benefits as of this year, with the funds to come from their 2010 salary raises. Last week the borough council adopted a salary resolution giving full-time non-unionized and DPW employees a 4 percent salary increase, but half of that amount will be applied to their health insurance premiums. Employees with single health coverage will contribute 1 percent of their salary. Part-time employees, who do not receive health benefits, will receive a salary increase of 2 ¼ percent for 2010. “We wanted to keep non-unionized employees on a par with the unionized employees, so they all follow similar standards,” said Councilman Don Sciolaro, who serves as

the police commissioner. “We are happy that they will be contributing to their health care,” he added. The health benefits contribution applies to 12 DPW union members and 23 full-time non-union employees. The borough is discussing a similar provision with the PBA, the police union, according to Borough Administrator Gary Kratz. Mayor Russell Litchult praised Kratz for his involvement in the process. “Gary did a good job,” Litchult said during last week’s council meeting. The new three-year DPW agreement provides 3 percent increases for the second and third years of the contract, Kratz said. The settlement was reached in December. The borough is projecting a savings of about $40,000
due to the contributions of the two groups. The total bill to the NJ Health Benefits program is about $870,000, including the police, according to Kratz. The administrator said that negotiations with the PBA, whose contract expired on Dec. 30, are ongoing, and that the four sessions that have already taken place have been “frank and open discussions.” Councilmen Sciolaro and Frank Palladino are part of the borough’s negotiations team along with Kratz. The PBA team is headed by Det. Sgt. Kevin Smith.
The Waldwick Band will continue its 2009-10 Winter Season with a concert on Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Crescent School on Crescent Avenue, Waldwick. The 3 p.m. concert will feature saxophonist Lew Archer. There is no admission charge for this performance, which is being sponsored by the Waldwick Department of Recreation. The principal saxophonist with the Waldwick Band, Archer has studied with Paul Cohen and has performed with the Ridgewood Concert Band and the Teaneck Summer Band. The soloist has appeared as a featured player on several earlier occasions with the band soloing on the soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones. For the Feb. 6 concert,

he will perform “Carnival,” a solo for saxophone and band by the noted English composer Phillip Sparke. The band will be under the baton of Music Director Edmund A. Moderacki, who will open the concert with the band’s current signature piece, Edwin Franco Goldman’s “Cheerio.” He will conduct the ensemble in the Overture to Gomez’s “Il Guarany” and James Curnow’s “Festivity.” An arrangement by Sammy Nestico of the music associated with Count Basie entitled, “Tribute to the Count,” Clare Grundman’s “Spirit of ’76,” and Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride” are also on the program. Marches by Karl King, Fred Jewell, and John Phillip Sousa will also be presented.
