Waldwick December 22, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 7 Waldwick residents will be able to recycle e-waste at curbside in the new year. The borough council approved the program at its public meeting last week. At the recommendation of Borough Administrator Gary Kratz, the third Monday of the month will be designated for the e-recycling. The remaining Mondays will continue to be used for white goods collection. Pick up appointments E-waste recycling program to start in January must be made by calling the borough clerk’s office. Televisions, computers, radios, cell phones, copiers and other electronic equipment will be eligible to be recycled either by placing it at the curb or taking it to the public works garage, where a designated container will be available. Employees will use a pick-up truck, not a compactor, to pick up the items. The Allendale/Waldwick PBA Local 217 recently donated 164 Hams to the Center for Food Action (CFA) in Mahwah. The hams were purchased with the $2,000 that the PBA traditionally uses for the holiday decoration contest. Due to the overwhelming need for food at the CFA, the PBA voted to use the money to make this purchase. The hams were purchased at a discount due to the generosity of Allendale A&P. The hams were accepted by Jim James of the Center for Food Action. The PBA also donated food and financial assistance to families in both Waldwick and Allendale that were in need. PBA helps those in need Councilman Frank Palladino said the council should mandate that smaller items be brought to the DPW garage so as not to burden the department. Kratz said that he does not anticipate a lot of activity, except perhaps after the holidays. He asked, however, that residents bring to the DPW items that fit in their cars rather than calling for a pick up. Sims Recycling Solutions of Jersey City will pick up the container and dispose of its contents in a legal manner, “rather than selling it to a Third World country,” according to Kratz. The company will not charge the borough for the removal of the container or the disposal, he said. Palladino cautioned residents to avoid identity theft by clearing the hard drive of their computers before disposing of them. Resident Frank McKenna noted that copiers and phones have stored memory as well and should be cleared. Kratz explained that while municipalities are not mandated to recycle e-waste, state law does not allow the disposal of electronic waste in the landfills. “Since we are the ones that collect and send waste to the landfills, it behooves us to be able to dump legally,” he said.
