Public invited to New Year’s Day reorganization session
by Jennifer Crusco New Year’s Day will bring two new faces to the Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Council, as Kevin Shea and Philip Rorty take the oath of office. The public is invited to attend the annual reorganization session, which is set for noon at borough hall. The two out-going members of the council are Lee Flemming and Gordon Hamm. Flemming ran “off-line” in the primary, and was edged by his Republican opponents. Hamm had announced his intention not to seek reelection earlier this year. Flemming will complete his term on the council on Dec. 31. He holds an MBA from the University of Buffalo and a teaching degree from the State University College at Buffalo. After 17 years in sales, marketing, and finance with Benjamin Moore, he served as vice president of marketing for Muralo. He then became a full-time agent and development specialist with Abbott & Caserta. He is involved in business development for HILTI North America. He has served as a coach for local soccer, basketball, and baseball teams, and was a coach for a local travel basketball team. Hamm is now completing his second term on the borough council. When he announced his decision to step down, Hamm said he wanted to help build up the borough’s downtown. Hamm is a partner in the group that is now running the borough-owned HoHo-Kus Inn, a landmark in the downtown business district. The councilman also plans to remain active with the Ho-Ho-Kus Ambulance Corps, which he joined in September 2009. He recently indicated that he will be taking EMT classes, which begin in January. He is also a member of the Community Resource Council’s board, and serves on the foundation board at Bergen Community College and on various condo and co-op boards in Manhattan. He received a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Bowling Green State University, where he is a member of the Foundation Board of Trustees. He is partner and chief operating officer of Garage Management Associates, LLC, a New York City-based parking company. Hamm is also partner in PJ Clarkes and Sidecar restaurants, and is a partner in various real estate properties. He is a trustee of Local Union 272 Pension and Welfare Funds in New York and serves on the Labor Negotiation Team for the Metropolitan Parking Association. He has served on the Ho-Ho-Kus Planning Board, president of the Ho-Ho-Kus/ Saddle River Recreation Commission, and as a coach for local baseball and soccer teams. He is a partner in Kidville, a child development center. Councilman-elect Rorty is a vice president with Liberty International Underwriters. He has coached local sports teams and served as an Assistant Cub Master. His service to the borough includes chairing the Ho-Ho-Kus Republican County Committee, and serving as a planning board member and as president of the Ho-HoKus Volunteer Fire Department. Councilman-elect Shea is employed by Goldman Sachs. He has been a member of the Ho-Ho-Kus Zoning Board of Adjust-
ment, and is a member of the board of the Dolan School of Business. He is active at Saint Gabriel’s Church. He is also known for purchasing and renovating the historical home known informally as “The Gingrich House.”
Students interview planetary geologist
As one of the culminating activities for their study of the moon, second grade students at Ho-Ho-Kus Public School were able to Skype a planetary geologist from NASA. Bill Marinelli, a Ho-HoKus alumnus from the Class of 1972, is presently working at NASA headquarters in Washington D.C. and belongs to NASA’s Space Communication and Navigation Office.
