Chief McCarthy, who nominated the officers, said that on Thanksgiving Day, a 70-year-old, part-time crossing guard suffered a massive heart attack and appeared to be dead when Sergeant Joseph Carey and Patrolman Scott Kunzel rushed to help him. The officers began CPR, and then used the portable defibrillator. The first attempt failed, but the second try restored a heartbeat and triggered labored but palpable Two ofﬁcers nominated for Life Saving Medals Former police chief honored The Allendale Foundation for Educational Excellence will host its 16th annual fundraiser on Friday, March 4 at the Ridgewood Woman’s Club. This year’s event, which has a “Denim and Diamonds” theme, will include mystery board prizes, baskets, a cash prize, and auction items. All proceeds directly benefit enrichment programs and innovative technology for Allendale schools. Tickets are $75 per person, and include dinner and beverages. The two officers continued to administer first aid until the man could be taken to Valley Hospital, where he was placed on life support. After continued medical treatment at Valley, his condition stabilized. Chief McCarthy reported that the man is expected to make a full recovery thanks to the quick assistance he received from Sergeant Carey and Patrolman Kunzel. Schoepflin and several other council members agreed that Sergeant Carey and Patrolman Kunzel had performed with great dedication and skill, and seconded Chief McCarthy’s request that they be awarded a PBA Life Saving Medal for their rescue. First prize is 80 percent of winning share; second prize, 16 percent of winning share; and third prize, four percent of winning share. The winners will be named at AFEE’s auction on March 4. Recently retired Allendale Police Chief Robert Herndon was honored at a luncheon in Sea Girt for his service as a member of The New Jersey Police Training Commission since 1999. Herndon was honored by The Police Academy Director’s Association of New Jersey for his many years of service to the commission, which establishes and supervises police training in police academies throughout the state.
