The Allendale Board of Education accepted $47,975 in donations from the Allendale Foundation for Educational Excellence as part of the grant cycle for the autumn of 2010. The foundation provides enhanced public education at no additional cost to the taxpayers. A substantial portion of the money covered the cost of SMART boards: $11,576 was earmarked for two classrooms at Hillside School, and $16,270 was earmarked for two SMART boards at Brookside School. The Hillside School also accepted $460 for a program on the Lenape Indians for third grade, $850 for a program on birds of prey for third grade, $2,800 for a program on movement and dance for second and third grades, $3,780 for a program on writing fundamentals for the second grade, $1,532 for comprehension strategies, and $422 for the library. The Brookside School received $420 for a program on algebra for the eighth grade, $5,067 for a program in integrated arts

expansion, $5,067 for a program in integrated art and music expansion, $1,200 for a trip to the Newark Museum for grades seven and eight, $1,000 for a fitness program with pedometers for grades four through eight, and $1,999 for SMART response clickers for grade six. The board also approved a trip to the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City for fourth grade students at $24 per student. The trip is designed to reinforce science concepts learned in the classroom, specifically electricity and interactions with water. The board also approved a trip for selected eighth grade students to Ramapo College in Mahwah for a problem-based learning convocation. The board also extended the contract of Lawrence V. Hughes as the Allendale school system’s interim superintendent through March 1 unless either side chooses to terminate the contract. J. KOSTER
They’re the tops!
Allendale’s Hillside and Brookside schools have concluded the Fall Box Top contests. Winners were treated to a pizza party sponsored by the Allendale PTO. Box tops are submitted and, in return, the schools receive a check to use for additional supplies or programs. An anonymous donation of 2,500 box tops helped bring the dollar amount raised to just over $1,500. The residents of Allendale will be able to dispose of all their recyclables in the same can or cans starting the first week of January. The Allendale Borough Council hopes this change will increase recycling, preserve the environment, and bring in some revenue at the same time. “One of the advantages of recycling is that we eventually get some money,” Councilman Jim Strauch said when Road Department Supervisor Keith Cauwenberghs announced that his men were ready to make the change. “We’re actually saving money and

reducing the number of things that they (the residents) have to do,” Cauwenberghs said. Homeowners may now use the same trash barrels -- 30 gallons maximum -- to dispose of clear, green, and brown glass, all seven kinds of plastic, and packaging used to hold shelf-stable milk, all at the same time. The borough council approved a contract with Green Sky Industries of Clifton, which will accept, and pay for, the commingled recyclables. J. KOSTER
