Ho-Ho-Hus December 15, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 Change of energy supplier to include $35K savings by Jennifer Crusco The Ho-Ho-Kus Council recently approved a resolution that authorized Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Administrator Don Cirulli to sign a letter of understanding with America Approved Energy Services, an electricity supply consultant that gives consumers access to various energy providers. This decision to move to a new power supply company, Cirulli confirmed, could save the borough approximately $35,000 per year. The AAES website states that the firm was established to provide commercial entities in energy deregulated states access to multiple energy providers. The company now works in New Jersey, Texas, Maryland, New York, Delaware, Maine, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, and in Washington, D.C. The website states, “Deregulation is your opportunity to shop for the best energy rates.” According to promotional material supplied by AAES, energy customers will receive the same service and bill. AAES indicates there are no enrollment fees, no deposit, no termination fees, no contract, and no credit check. The administrator pointed out that PSE&G buys power from other production companies, and makes its money on the delivery of that power. Consumers in energy deregulated states are permitted to buy power that is delivered through PSE&G, but may be purchased at a lower rate, Cirulli explained. The resolution approved by the Ho-Ho-Kus Council states that the borough has sought quotations for the provision of electricity supply procurement consulting services, and at least two competitive quotations have been solicited. The governing body has found the quote provided by AAES as being the more advantageous. The administrator explained that AAES goes out to bid on behalf of the borough, and the borough makes the deal with the supplier. PSE&G continues to deliver the energy at the rate quoted by the company. AAES, he said, receives a commission from the company that supplies the borough. According to Cirulli, AAES received quotes from five companies on the borough’s behalf. Those companies included Constellation NewEnergy, LibertyPower, FirstEnergy, Nextera Energy Services, and Hudson Energy. The administrator reported that Hudson Energy has been chosen as the supplier for a 12-month period at a rate of 0.09619 cents per kilowatt hour. Cirulli noted that PSE&G currently charges over 12 cents per kilowatt hour. In an effort to cut costs, Cirulli said he has been looking into various options, including non-PSE&G electric and gas that would still be delivered by PSE&G. The borough recently had three companies, including PSE&G, conduct energy audits, and officials have looked into a solar energy option. Cirulli noted that he and other local officials continue to seek options to save funds through shared services with other communities and by other means. Earlier this year, Cirulli effected an upgrade and simplification of the borough’s phone system, which he said was a complex operation since the phones and computers were hooked up together. He brought in Mass Communications of New York (“Masscom”) for a one-time review of the municipality’s system at a cost of $3,000. The borough continues to use Avaya hardware and software, but now receives service from Masscom. The borough also changed its Internet service provider from Megapath to Optiumum. The upgrade and simplification, Cirulli said, will save an estimated $5,000 per year.
