Kratz said that the department was cognizant of the economic crunch the borough is under. “They have taken steps to control overtime and promised to take additional steps next year. They are looking at the crossing guard deployment, and continue to take steps to cut costs,” he said. “The department has been very willing to look at various things. Their reaction is never ‘no’ but rather ‘Let’s play around with this,’ ” he added. The administrator said that as of January 1, the department would be down to 17 sworn officers, from 19. Det. Sgt. Kevin Smith retired in June, and Patrolman Patrick Logue retired last week. Kratz suggested the council authorize filling one sergeant position from the Civil Service list and decide on advertising the patrolman openings and whether to hire police academy graduates or recruits who would need to attend the police academy. “You need the detective sergeant; you need five sergeants,” former Mayor Frank McKenna told the governing body. “Nineteen is probably as good as the department can shrink and be efficient and do a top notch job.” ANYTHING COMPUTER OF MIDLAND PARK Virus Removal We’ll remove viruses, adware and spyware and install software to help prevent it from happening again! $ Reg. $65 55 Exp. 12/31/10 Free Diagnostics 646 Godwin Ave, Midland Park, NJ 07432 201-444-5445 Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays & Happy New Year from our family to yours 12-8-10 AnythingComputerGodwinPlaza2xColor Ester... from Janine Family Hair Care
