Collector cards help police, youths build rapport
by Jennifer Crusco Three years ago, the Ho-Ho-Kus Police Department launched a collector card program to build rapport with local youths. The program, which encourages children to interact with the police officers in a positive way and request their cards, has been such a success that the department may have found a future recruit. Last week, as the community bid farewell to retiring Police Chief Gregory Kallenberg, a young man named Sheldon helped greet the guests at the Nov. 30 gathering. Sheldon was introduced as a future member of the department, although he has to finish elementary school before he can apply. This young man has dutifully gathered all of the police officers’ cards, and was clearly enjoying his interaction with all of the officers present. (See page 22.)

Sports enthusiasts have enjoyed collecting baseball cards since they appeared in the 19th century. In 2007, Kallenberg decided to capitalize on the popularity of collector cards by creating a set for his department’s personnel. The police departments in Fair Lawn and Emerson had been running a similar program, and Kallenberg recognized its potential. Once the program was launched, students from kindergarteners to fourth graders, and some older children, began to introduce themselves to the officers and request their cards. Each officer has a card that includes his or her photograph, a brief biographical sketch, and personal information that might include a favorite quote or the names of the officer’s children. Everyone is represented from the chief through the department’s rookie of the year. (continued on page 25)
