December 8, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 25 Waldwick Watch Cooking demo, tasting set A special food tasting and healthy cooking demonstration will be held at Waldwick Public Library on Friday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. The program, sponsored by the Bergen County Department of Health Services and presented by Whole Foods Market, is designed to encourage people to eat more fruits and vegetables. The library was awarded this special presentation for its creative programming efforts during the county-sponsored contest “September is National Fruits & Vegetables Month: More Matters!” To compete for the prize, the library held a contest to guess the weight of a basket of apples, exhibited a colorful display of library materials, and staged special programs for children that incorporated the health benefits of fruits and vegetables into each performance. Residents are reminded not to rake any more leaves to the curbside. Residents may now bag their leaves in paper lawn bags for curbside collection every Tuesday through Dec. 21, or take the leaves to the recycling center at 19 Industrial Way. Book club to discuss King novel The Waldwick Library will host a discussion of “The Pleasing Hour” by Lily King on Thursday, Dec. 9 at 7:15 p.m. In this novel, Rosie, a downhearted Ameri- can au pair on a Paris houseboat, falls in love with the children she helps care for, and then with their father. Gourmet cakes and pies available The Friends of the Waldwick Library’s holiday fundraiser is featuring gourmet cakes and pies from the Carousel Cakes Bakery at discount prices. These specialty desserts retail for $40 in gourmet shops, but can be ordered through the Waldwick Library at $15 per pie and $17 per cake. Black and white mousse, carrot, New York blackout, New York cheese, and mousse supreme are among the cake offerings. Pie selections include coconut custard, Toll House, pumpkin, pumpkin cheese, pecan, and a variety of fruit pies. Order forms, a catalogue of desserts, and other details are available at the library circulation desk. The deadline for placing orders for Christmas is noon on Saturday, Dec. 11. Pies will be available for pickup on Wednesday, Dec. 22. The Friends of the Waldwick Library organization raises funds to provide programs and services that are beyond the scope of the library’s annual operating budget. According to the department’s website, ho-ho-kuspolice.com, no one should approach an officer who is writing a ticket or conducting an investigation. Students are also cautioned not to approach an officer who has activated the lights on his or her police vehicle. Once students collect all of the department members’ cards, they will receive a replica of a police badge. Individuals who helped bring the program to Ho-Ho-Kus include: Officer Michael Tuttle, who coordinated the program and arranged the photographs; Officer M Mosca, who provided the Web design; Councilman John Mongelli, who designed the cards; and Councilman Gordon Hamm, who sponsored the pro- Collector cards gram through the Kidville organization. The Ho-Ho-Kus Police Department also reaches out to the borough’s youth by sponsoring a Junior Police Academy program during the summer. The academy, which was launched in 2006 with 15 cadets who were about to enter sixth grade, drew twice as many recruits in 2007. Police officers Sean Leonard, Christopher Minchin, Anthony Balestrieri, and M Mosca provide the children with a police academy-style experience on the grounds of the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School. The curriculum includes daily calisthenics, discipline, and police techniques. Cadets work on crime scene investigation, visit the Law & Public Safety Institute in Mahwah, take a turn with goggles that simulate the type of view an intoxicated driver might have, and end the program with a graduation ceremony. We are also available to come speak at your fundraiser or event and talk about our programs. Get your kids involved. Some have held bake sales, yard sales, or had hot chocolate stands.
