Co-workers, friends, family celebrate chief’s career
by Jennifer Crusco Co-workers, friends, and family members gathered to celebrate Gregory Kallenberg’s career on Nov. 30, his last official day as chief of police in the Borough of Ho-HoKus. The well-attended celebration was held in the Ho-HoKus Ambulance Corps training room. The guest of honor personally greeted dozens of wellwishers, who were urged to sign in. Those in attendance included Mayor Thomas Randall, Councilmen John Mongelli and Gordon Hamm, Borough Administrator Don Cirulli, Borough Clerk Laura Borchers and former clerk Judy Odo, multiple present and former members of the borough hall staff, Ambulance Corps President Carol Tyler, multiple members of the police department, and Ramsey Police Chief Bryan Gurney. Long-time friends, including Mike Limatola, and Kallenberg’s wife Laura and their son Adam were also in attendance. A special guest was a young man who was introduced as Sheldon. Sheldon has been an avid collector of the Ho-HoKus Police Department’s “baseball cards”, and has already expressed his desire to become a member of the police department. (See related story on page 6.) Many people commented on Kallenberg’s professionalism, knowledge, skill, and respectful manner. However, he was “roasted” later in the evening. Laura Kallenberg said her husband’s retirement hit home last week when he cleaned out his office at police headquarters. The retired chief does not have any imminent plans to begin a second career. He indicated that he would like to spend some time fishing and pursuing other outdoor activities. In August, Kallenberg announced his intention to step down as chief. He had logged 30 years in law enforcement. Before he joined the HoHo-Kus Police Department, Kallenberg was employed by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, working in the jails and as a bailiff in the courts. Former Ho-Ho-Kus Police Chief Robert Re subsequently hired Kallenberg as a patrolman. Kallenberg advanced through the department’s ranks, being named sergeant and lieutenant before being sworn in as chief in 2001. When he announced his retirement this summer, Kallenberg said this seemed to be the right time. He indicated that he has been working continuously for four decades since he was 14. A life-long resident of Midland Park, Kallenberg attended the local schools and graduated from Midland Park High School in 1974. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy’s submarine service. He left the U.S. Navy as a first class petty officer.
