Ho-Ho-Kus December 1, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 Captain Wanamaker named officer in charge by Jennifer Crusco Ho-Ho-Kus Police Captain John Wanamaker has been named officer in charge of the borough’s police department. The council resolution, which was approved at last week’s public meeting, indicates that the assignment will take effect Dec. 1 and will remain in effect until a successor to out-going Police Chief Gregory Kallenberg is officially appointed. Kallenberg stepped down from his post Nov. 30 after three decades in law enforcement. Wanamaker, a 26-year veteran of the Ho-Ho-Kus Police Department, was promoted to the rank of captain in May. Originally hired as a dispatcher, Wanamaker later became a patrolman. He became a sergeant in 2000, and remained in that position until 2002, when he was promoted to the lieutenant’s post. During his service to the Ho-Ho-Kus Police Department, Wanamaker has received two Life-Saving Awards: one for assisting a man who was experiencing cardiac arrest while working out at Wanamaker’s gym, and another for assisting in the armed standoff on Hollywood Avenue last fall. Wanamaker has also received a number of commendations, multiple physical fitness awards, the END DWI Award, and numerous letters of gratitude from those he has assisted over the years. The structure of the Ho-Ho-Kus Police Department allows for the positions of chief, captain, lieutenant, sergeant, and patrol officer. The captain’s post, the chief’s second-in-command, had been vacant since Harold “Bud” Minchin left the department several years ago. Wanamaker has been in charge of the Ho-Ho-Kus Traffic Bureau for approximately 10 years. He has also served as Terminal Access Coordinator, a post that has since been assumed by Officer M Mosca. Wanamaker handles in-service training for the department’s personnel, schedules classes for Ho-Ho-Kus officers who wish to attend courses at the Law & Public Safety Institute, and schedules all shifts for the department. Wanamaker is a graduate of Waldwick High School, where he met his future wife, Meg. The two have been married for 20 years and still reside in Waldwick. They have two sons, a seventh grader and a sophomore. When he is off duty, Wanamaker coaches the local lacrosse program. A life-long resident of Midland Park, Kallenberg attended the local schools and graduated from Midland Park High School in 1974. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy’s submarine service. He left the U.S. Navy as a first class petty officer. Kallenberg later joined the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, working in the jails and as a bailiff in the courts. Former Ho-Ho-Kus Police Chief Robert Re hired Kallenberg, who entered his service to the borough’s department as a patrolman. Kallenberg advanced through the ranks, and has been the department’s topranking officer since 2001. The Ho-Ho-Kus Council, which generally meets on the third and fourth Tuesday of each month, will hold only one meeting in December.
