Club welcomes new members, hosts events The Saddle River Valley Newcomers Club welcomes all residents from Saddle River and Upper Saddle River, regardless of the length of their residency. Auxiliary hosts Holiday Luncheon & Boutique The Saddle River Valley Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary will host its Annual Holiday Luncheon & Boutique at the Ridgewood Country Club on Tuesday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Enjoy lunch while shopping for the holidays with vendors including Neiman Marcus, Hamrah’s, Little Nikki’s and more. Featured items will include costume jewelry, handbags, scarves, holiday decorations, and more. A gold buyer will be on hand, so attendees may bring gold jewelry they may want to sell. The cost is $55 per person and includes lunch, beverages, valet parking, and coat check. Book groups to discuss ‘The Family Man’ “The Family Man” will be the topic of discussion at both book groups of the Upper Saddle River Library. The Novels at Night group will meet on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m., and Coffee Talk will meet on Dec. 9 at 10:30 a.m. Copies of the book may be picked up at the circulation desk. Friends plan Holiday Boutique The Friends of the Upper Saddle River Library will host a Holiday Boutique on Saturday, Dec. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A large variety of handmade items will be available. Photo benefit announced Have your pet photographed with Santa at the Animal Hospital of Saddle River, 171 East Saddle River Road in Saddle River, on Dec. 4 from 1 to 4 p.m. A $10 donation is requested for each photo, and 100 percent will benefit the Onyn & Breezy Foundation, a non-profit that benefits animals in need. Cyber bullying to be discussed The Upper Saddle River Police Department, in conjunction with the Upper Saddle River Youth Guidance Council and Cavallini Middle School, will present a program on cyber bullying on Thursday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. Upper Saddle River parents with children in grades four through 12 are encouraged to attend. The program is designed for parents. No one under 21 years of age will be admitted. The program will be held in the auditorium at Cavallini Middle School, 392 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. Refreshments will be served from 7 to 7:30 p.m. “Sticks and Stones,” a film developed by Park Ridge High School’s school psychologist and student assistance counselor Andrew Yeager and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, will be shown. The film explores the irreversible consequences of cyber bullying via social networks, e-mail, cell phones, instant messages, and texting. A question and answer session will follow the movie. Special needs basketball offered For the first time, the Upper Saddle River Basketball Association is offering a structured, small group basket-
ball clinic for special needs children in grades two and three. Clinics will be held on Sundays at 9 a.m. for an hour in the Reynolds School gym. The players will warm up, run drills, and scrimmage each other. Built-in breaks and other accommodations will be made. Each participant will require a parent shadow for all clinics. District offers preschool openings The Upper Saddle River school district has announced six general educational openings in the Integrated Preschool Program for September 2011. The Integrated Preschool Program is a nursery school program that incorporates the education of special education children with general education preschoolers. The program is held at Reynolds School. All children in the program attend five half-days a week from 8:30 to 11 a.m. The first 15 applicants will be screened in early December; other applicants will be placed on a waiting list. The six openings will be offered by Dec. 22. The current tuition is $3,750; the tuition for 2011-12 will be determined in June 2011. To be eligible, a general education student must be four years of age on or before Oct. 1, 2011. A birth certificate, copy of immunizations, and four proofs of residency will be required. SRVJCO hosts events The Saddle River Valley Jewish Community will host its Annual Hanukkah Party on Friday, Dec. 3 at the Upper Saddle River Library from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. The party will feature a magician and treats for children under age eight. Scouts seek donations of outerwear Girl Scouts Victoria M. and Allison N. of Troops 1271 and 1375 are currently seeking new and clean, gently-used outerwear to be donated to the Boys and Girls Club in Paterson. The Cavallini Middle School students are working toward earning their Silver Awards. Outerwear being collected includes coats, ski jackets, scarves, hats, gloves, boots, and rain boots. Library announces fall programs The Upper Saddle River Library has planned various fall programs that are free and open to library cardholders in Bergen County, unless otherwise noted. Bridge Club meets on Mondays at 7 p.m. or Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Players are grouped by experience level. Preregistration is required. A variety of fitness classes are available including: Chi Kung on Mondays at 11 a.m.; Strengthen, Tone, and Stretch on Mondays at 9; Pilates on Mondays at 7:30 p.m.; Yoga, all levels, on Tuesdays at 9:45 a.m.; and Gentle Stretch Yoga for seniors on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. The library is located at 245 Lake Street. Bowling league seeks members The Wednesday morning ladies bowling league, Ladies of the Presentation, is seeking bowlers for its fall program. The league bowls on Wednesday mornings at 9:35 a.m. at the Montvale Lanes, 14 West Grand Avenue, Montvale. The program runs for 33 weeks during the school year and is open to everyone. The cost is $15 per week, and includes a year-end luncheon and prize.
