Waldwick December 1, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 11 A Dora Avenue resident asked the Waldwick Mayor and Council last week to step up efforts to clean up the town, including re-instituting town-wide cleanup days. “This town is becoming a pig pen,” James Wrocklage of Dora Avenue told the governing body. “The town has been lax in doing something about this. I hope I am not offending anyone. If I am, I really don’t care,’ he added. Wrocklage said that he has been going around town picking up litter for years, stopping at Borough Park, the woods adjacent to the 7-Eleven, along the railroad tracks, the Crescent School property and other areas. “Some garbage is just a few feet from a garbage can,” he said, adding: “I don’t blame the Road Department. It’s the Waldwick citizenry and those who pass through Waldwick that are at fault.” Wrocklage suggested sending out a letter to residents urging them to pick up trash in their neighborhood. He also asked the council to sponsor townwide cleanups three times a year. A number of years ago, the borough had a yearly event where residents gathered to cleanup their streets and take their overflow recyclables to the DPW garage. That Resident wants to reinstitute cleanup days effort is now down to just a recycling day. Councilwoman Anita Bozzo agreed. “We should have a cleanup day,” she said. Bozzo encouraged Wrocklage to contact the building department if he sees property maintenance problems near businesses, such as the 7-Eleven. “I appreciate your efforts. It’s something to discuss, to help organize. We live here; we have a vested interest,” said Councilman Frank Palladino, who agreed that the cleanup day should be reinstituted. Wrocklage also said that young people are gathering along the railroad tracks and behind a local church to drink at night, leaving bottles and cans behind. Chuck Wanamaker, the president of the Waldwick Community Alliance, sympathized with Wrocklage, noting that he, himself, had gathered more than 100 bags of trash along Hewson Street and the tracks. Resident Al Coldon said that hundreds of bottles can be seen along the tracks from the Franklin Avenue bridge. He added, however, he thought that the railroad right of way is off limits because it is private property. Mayor Russell “Buddy” Litchult said he would call a meeting this week with the administrator and department heads to discuss the issues raised by Wrocklage.
