Court administrator realizes fee savings for borough
by Jennifer Crusco Rosemarie Novelli-Salyer, court administrator for the Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus, recently saved the municipality $897 in bank service/analysis fees. Last week, the administrator explained that, for many years, the borough’s various administrative entities had all used the same banking institution, and the fees were consolidated. Last year, the borough moved its accounts to another bank that offered free checking. The court was planning to also make that move, but when Novelli-Salyer advised the bank she was preparing to close the court’s account, the bank waived the fees and credited the account for all of the fees that had been charged since September 2009. “The fees were previously deducted from the monthly disbursements to the Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus from the municipal court,” Novelli-Salyer told Mayor Thomas Randall and the borough’s administration in a recent letter. “I have forwarded a check…in the amount of $897.32 to the Borough of Ho-ho-Kus for reimbursement to the borough for these fees.” The court administrator reported that the bank fees that were returned covered the months of September 2009 through April 2010. “We have free checking,” Novelli-Salyer told Villadom TIMES. “I was glad. I had to be persistent, but it paid off.” The court administrator pointed out that the analysis fees charged by the bank seemed unnecessary to her as she is already audited by the borough’s auditor and by the
Administrative Office of the Courts. Novelli-Salyer has been the administrator in Ho-HoKus for 10 years. She was instrumental in implementing staggered court times to allow more people involved in the cases an opportunity to park in the municipal lot. Court is in session one day a month, and the lot had previously overflowed as everyone arrived at the same time, leaving defendants, attorneys, and others involved in the cases searching for parking in the limited amount of spaces in the borough hall lot. Novelli-Salyer proposed the current system, which allows attorney cases to begin at a designated time, followed by cases for those with last names beginning with A-L, and another time for those with last names beginning with M-Z.
