Book Club to discuss ‘Swan Thieves’ The Waldwick Library Book Club will host a discussion of “Swan Thieves” by Elizabeth Kostova on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 7:15 p.m. In this follow-up to her blockbuster debut novel about the undead (“The Historian,” 2005), Kostova presents a romance about a contemporary painter’s obsession with an undiscovered 19th century Impressionist. Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk. The book club welcomes new members and drop-ins regardless of residency. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. For more information, call (201) 652-5104. Auxiliary to meet The Waldwick Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary will meet Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. at the Waldwick Methodist Church on Franklin Turnpike. Refreshments will be served, and new members are welcome to attend. Band announces September performance The Waldwick Band, under the baton of Edmund A. Moderacki, will conclude its summer season with a concert on Friday evening, Sept. 3 in the parking lot of Hudson City Savings Bank on East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Audience members should bring their own seating for this 8 p.m. performance, which is free of charge. In the event of rain, the concert will be postponed until Sept. 10. Weather updates for this event will be available at www.waldwickband.org. The featured work at the concert will be Gordon Jacob’s “Music for a Festival.” Also on then program will be “Festivity” by James Curnow, “Blue Danube Waltz” by Johann Strauss, and Robert Russell Bennett’s arrangement of music by Cole Porter. The Waldwick Band’s saxophone quartet will perform two works, and marches by Carl Teike, Karl King, and Kenneth Alford will complete the program. The Waldwick Band will perform a different program on Monday evening, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. as they perform for the Closter Labor Day Fireworks. The 7 p.m. concert will take place at Memorial Field on High Street in Closter and is also free to the public. Local students exhibit photographs Photographs by members of the Waldwick High School Photography Club will be on display at the Waldwick Public Library through Tuesday, Aug. 31. Featured in the exhibit are 14 colorful images of bridges, Ferris wheels, sunsets, a variety cityscapes, and scenes from the New Jersey shore. Contributors to the exhibit are Ashley Davies, Courtney Dock, Elyssa Giordano, Alexa Iannantuano, Christine Laganella, Haley McClelland, Stephanie Montana, Ali Moore, and Eric Thom. Under the guidance of world cultures teacher Ted Opderbeck, the Waldwick High School Photography Club meets regularly during the school year. Club members learn about photographic techniques, share their photos on a website, display their work in a gallery at the high school, and have visited New York City, Boston, and the New Jersey shore region. Film series features famed directors Waldwick Public Library hosts screenings of classic films on Thursdays at 2 p.m. A brief introduction, setting the film in its historical context, will precede each screening. The theme for the month of August is Famous Directors. “Great Expectations” directed by David Lean (1946) will be the Aug. 26 presentation. Classic film screenings are free and open to the public. Lions host Golf Classic The Waldwick Lions Club will once again host its annual team Golf Classic at Bowling Green Golf Club on Monday, Sept. 20. The event will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The event, a team and best-ball outing, will begin with skills competitions such as breaking a pane of glass by chipping, and putting contests. The entry fee includes free range balls, full breakfast, and lunch and libations along with giveaways and on-course performance prizes. Ambulance corps seeks new recruits The Waldwick Volunteer Ambulance Corps, which is comprised of trained members who provide the community with high quality ambulance service at no charge to the Borough seeks CERT volunteers The Borough of Waldwick Office of Emergency Management and the Waldwick Police Department are asking citizens to volunteer their services to help safeguard the country, the communities, their families, and themselves by volunteering to participate in the Community Emergency Response Team program. CERT training consists of 20 hours of instruction over an eight-week period. Classes are taught by emergency responders, including firefighters, emergency medical services, and law enforcement personnel from the community. At the completion of the training program, basic CERT safety equipment will be issued to each successful participant.
